What does good taxidermy look like?

Highveld taxidermy,
Nico van Rooyen taxidermy,
Custos taxidermy.

Any of the three does excellent work.
I must admit that I haven't recently had work done by Nico van Rooyen, but their work is top notch.
Highveld is very Questionable , I have seen some really shoddy work done by them .
there are many post on this page that point this out too.

Here is my nyala that I had done in the states. Front and back.

It all comes down to the definition of quality. The "highest quality" stuff I see posted here and most of the stuff at Cabelas I'd classify as "journeyman commercial taxidermy". Not terrible. But certainly not award-winning, best in the world, nor does it look "alive".

It's not a bad thing, everyone has a different standard of quality. For a humorous look at the bottom rung grab the coffee table book on Amazon called "bad taxidermy".

Too bad I didn't see this post when it started back in 2017. I would have said something about the quality of Highveld. But since it was resurrected, I'll throw in the high quality work done on my impala by Highveld. Oh and there is a lot of hair on this impala.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….
