Hy everybody! Today, I write this post to show a kind of hunt very popular in my country and unknown in the rest of the world... THE VIZCACHA (LAGOSTOMUS MAXIMUS) a medium sized animal of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay with a very appreciated meat and very challenging to hunt.
The methods to shot down this ellusive animals are so different than the hunters who try this...
The vizcacha live in holes called "vizcacheras" and leave your home at the sundown to eat grass... at this time the hunt is possible. This animal have a very fine sense of smell, heard and sight, and the lider of the herd (the "vizcachon", a large male who rules the herd) scream to alert the family at any signal of danger... because thath the hunters have avoid any noise, walk with the wind in the face and use the light only to locate the vizcachas and to shoot them, the shot placement is in the HEAD, only, because the instinct of this little animal is dive in the holes, even deadly wounded, and die inside the tunnels...

The calibers used in this hunt are variable, 22 LR, 17 HMR, 22mag, shotguns, a lot of rifles with small bullet like the 22 hornet or the 223, big rifles with reduced charges (bullets but my favourite is the PCP rifle, in 5,5 caliber...
The pics of this post are with my "SHARK" 5,5 PCP rifle made by "danielboom", a PCP guru in this country, and a good friend
The kids in the pictures are my two sons, Manuel and Matias...

+1 !!!!

And that does look like it would be a fun hunt. The little guys all over the world can be quite a challenge I think.

HAHAHAHA... you´re mother is a beautiful queen!!! but the KING has his attractive too (perhaps lost a little wit the years... jhahaha)
Most hunters here see the vizcacha hunt like a "training" for the big game, but in fact is so exciting and challenging than the big game

Sounds like fun hunting with your sons.

Thanks for showing us a different type of hunting in Argentina.

Olá Marcos, tudo bem?
Legal encontrar mais um sul americano!
Tenho vários amigos que vão sempre até á Argentina para caçar.
Tenho planos para ir também!

Great to see your boys taking after you. Good to get them trained with firearms and with how to use them. Nicely done. Bruce

Keep them hunting Marcos. Look forward to you posting some pig hunts this year! I wouldn't want your rifle to get rusty.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
