They just cracked off when the skin was moved.

Actually pretty close....I suspect when the bullet stretched the far hide it then rebounded back hard, breaking the petals as they bent over on themselves. The petals were all neatly broken off around the bullet. First time I've seen it but then again I've never really looked that hard before either. The glint of one just caught my attention. Learn something every day.
