Hey gang,

Anyone know if there is a limit on the number or size of knives in checked bags? I've got a request to bring several to Africa and wanted to check before I packed 8 knives in my bag.

I took 4 in my checked bag in June to Zim. Check the TSA site or maybe the particular airline. I dont think anyone cares in checked bags.

I checked last year and there is no limit to the number of knives you can take along...they just need to be in your checked luggage... or rifle case..

I went with 10 knives last year...9 Buck hunting knives to give away...

I was short one knife and gave the driver my pocket knife.

I put my knives in my gun case since it would be locked unless security asked me to unlock it. Regular checked baggage gets hit pretty hard by thieves in a number of airports both foreign and domestic. Next time you are waiting for your luggage at the carasel watch and see how many bags come through with all of the external pockets unzipped.

several times i came with 3 knives, each in a different checked bag from the middle east---no problem

make sure when you got 'zipped' bags to 'lock' them with a lock or with cable ties!
theft on certain airports [read jhb] can be a real problem sometimes
DON'T put ANY electronic equipment in your checked bags [camera, binocular etc] try and keep it in your hand luggage or better still, 'glad wrap' [plastic] your checked bags if the airport have the facility.
happy hunting!

I don't know how other countries handle it, but I had a nasty surprise flying from Australia via Seoul / Korea to Germany. We had a planned overnight stopover in Seoul, and I had a small hunting knife in my suitcase. They took it off me, stored it overnight, and apart from charging me about $50.00, I nearly did not get it back because they could "not remember" where they put it! So, if you have a stopover anywhere, check on local regulations.

I took over 5 knives both times I went to Africa & I had no problems. i had them in my luggage & they were locked after inspection!

I always carry several knives in my checked luggage. Hard suitcase, and plastic wrapped.

No problems whatsoever.

Thanks guys. Everyone that I have talked to about this has had no problems taking numerous knives along. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

If the knives are checked in your bags there is not a limit I know of.When I fly to Vegas or Atlanta from S Africa , I sometimes have up to 50 knives in my luggage.
As long as they are not banned items like switchblades.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
