I'm planning a buffalo hunt next year, probably in Tanzania. Nothing booked yet and still plenty of research to do, but Tanzania and especially the Selous does seem to capture the essence of Africa for me.

I intend to bring my non-hunting wife and it it occurred to me that it would be so much better all round if another hunter and his wife joined us. We'd all get to share the experience whether hunting, observing or staying in camp, plus I think 4 guests would make for a much better atmosphere.

If this idea is of interest, please post a message here or PM me. This might just be the opportunity you need to make it happen.

Welcome to AH...

Tanzania is a great place and the Selous has good cape buffalo...

A camp with 4 makes for a better setting than 2.

What length of safari are you planing to take? 7 - 10 - 14 day's or longer?

Many good outfitters operate in Tanzania, however prime dates are usually taken by now for next year.

Good luck in your planning process and may you have a great safari.

Thanks for the info James. I was thinking 10 or 14 days, and taking 2 or if possible during 14 days 3 buffalo. Some of the larger plains game are of interest too, but my main focus is buffalo.

What do you consider prime dates and why?

Hunting season starts July 1, and use to end December 31. However it was extended, however it is usually over by mid to late November due to rains. and you will see that most if not all outfitters hunting season is July to December.

Weather Hottest is October to April and cooler May to September.

Rain season is November - December and March - May. The roads turn to mud and not drivable at this time.

Rainy season starts in November and it becomes very difficult to get around when it rains.

A safari to the Selous will require a air charter and to help with expenses it is recommended that you are not the first or last hunter of the season to share the expense. Exception being Lion and Leopard hunting as outfitters are only allowed a few of each.

When you ask your potential outfitters some questions ask when the have taken Buffalo in the past 2 to 3 years by month. Then ask for horn size as i am sure you would like to take at least one with 40 inches or more.

If you have not started the process contact more that a few outfitters to see what dates that they have open. Prime sots go quickly. Game is allowed to roam at will and it tends to be seasonal in areas. What you see one week could be gone the next week.

James, thanks again for this useful information. It is much appreciated.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
