Hello All,

My wife and I have one whole day to spend in Johannesburg. This is our first trip there and I'm looking for MUST DO suggestions for our brief stay, before moving on to,our safari location.
Any suggestions?
Thank You.

MUST DO? I'd say a must do is stay out of town . . .

That would all depend on what you are interested in. There are various historical options, relaxation or even a quick trip to Pilanesburg national park in you aren't too tired.

Feel free to send me a PM if you would like to find out what is available.

I enjoyed it because a friend told me about his time in the forces during the period.

The touristy thing is always available.

Having a friend take me in to tour of the Old Fort, Soweto for lunch in a nice restaurant. (really) was an eye opener. Can't day that it screams to the top of my list of MUST for most people.

The question is a bit general - are you looking for touristy stuff? Outdoors/animal/zoo stuff? Spa/pampering for your better half? Golf? Casino/gambling? Organized tour? Etc etc

Joburg is much like any other big city in the world, I guess with an African twist to it. If you're going to be hunting then the Joburg Zoo or the Lion Park just north of the city probably don't make much sense. Equally if you come from the US, then shopping is best done at home.

If you're looking for African trinkets etc to take home then there are a few (touristy) markets around the city. As far as culture goes, the Apartheid museum already mentioned is an option. There are a couple of 'cultural villages' (read African villages designed with the tourists $$$ in mind) round and about Joburg. Otherwise there are not that many real world famous landmarks in the city.

If you shed more light on what you're looking for, then I'd be happy to add my suggestions.

for lunch go to mandala square to an upstairs greek restaurant called PAPAS , this you will never regret

For the most part I'm with Hank! Do not go out and about without a guide. It's a dangerous place.
Where are you headed for safari?

Agreed. My 2014 PH (an older guy) told me he could make twice as much working in Jburg but it wasn't worth getting shot. Last year my PH collected me in the airport with an 9mm on his hip. Speaks volumes

My one day Johannesburg itinerary:

Step 1) Get an early am flight to Cape Town
Step 2) Rent a car (drive on the wrong side of the road) in a loop down to the Cape Point/Cape of Good Hope along False Bay and back up to Table Bay and Table Mountain for the sunset!
Step 3) Late flight back to Johannesburg

You won't need an escort or a weapon :)!

Contact Anne at Hunter's Support/Air 2000. Have set up a driver to meet you at the airport. We had a lengthy layover and she set us up with a retired Dentist, Gavin S. Very knowledgeable, safe driver. We asked to see some sites and to go to a good market for African crafts. It turned out that we didn't have quite as much time as we thought, but we did get to Cambanos and Sons. http://www.cambanos.com/ We had a very good time there, time just flew. Found some very nice gifts for our children and parents. Well worth the time. I also highly recommend Dr. Gavin S.

I vote for the day trip to the Cape of good hope if you have the time. And stop at the vendors near the entrance to the park and negotiate for curios. You can get some amazing deals as they compete with each other.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
