Has anyone made an attempt to shoot a meerkat for a trophy mount? I'm dreaming of a "Timon and Pumbaa" (Lion King movies) mount.

Patrick Reynecke tells me that he sees them often, but in 20 years no one has asked for one. Am I the only one?

What would the preferred weapon be for this little guy? I'm taking a 30-06, and if I find the KSG is a go, that will be used for the meerkat and warthog. Any suggestion for the type of shotgun load to kill, but not destroy the meerkat?

Thanks for your guidance!

My bride wanted to see a Meerkat in the worst way.

We were completely done our first trip and had not seen hide nor hair of one.

We stop at a taxidermist in the Free State on the way to Joburg and enter the yard and what shows up?

Lucky or what.

Then it keeps getting closer, hmmmm. Not normal.

It turns out to be a pet!

Made my wife's trip.

I don't think this one can ever be on the trophy list at our house. :)

Great story! Cute little dude, too. I can only imagine how much her eyes lit up when she got to hold him. Lucky day, indeed.

After all the Elephant, Rhino, Hippo, crocs, Kudu, Penguins, Baboons, THIS was the highlight!

It was pretty incredible to see the look on her face.

I think a shotgun would work best. I have seen them hunting, but had no interest in one.

yip, the first time ever!!! Have other Outfitters shot one in the past?

We have a nice Franklin Fireplace in our sitting room at the lake house... Up on a little brick platform. I told my wife I wanted to get a very ugly Warthog to do a full mount and set there as we never use the fireplace. She came up with the "if your going to have Pumba, you'de better get Timon to go with him." We saw Meerkats but our PH would not let us shoot one.

Are they protected? Could they be imported to the USA?

I wonder if they'd make a nice pet? I don't judge people who want to hunt them but I'd be more interested in ahving one as a pet.

I can't say if they're protected. My guess is no, because Patrick tells me I can get one. After watching videos on YouTube, I'm actually thinking about the warthog as a shoulder mount instead. It looks to be a fairly big animal, and Timon on his neck, holding the ears would be pretty cool to me.

I think the whole idea is great! when I told the guys at my work that I would be hunting a warthog, the first suggestion was to get a meerkat as well.

after the meerkat and warthog... you need a lion to complete the image.

Matt, you give the dough to me, I'll get that lion! My reenlistment bonus won't get me that many critters :-(

if you cant afford it now, save up for a lion on your next trip to Africa.

I read about the prospect of them as pets a while back and from what I read the problem with them is their digging instinct. Not a good combination with home flooring I would imagine.

Nor for the flower garden or lawn.

A meerkat trophy would be so cool! :) How many of you have hunted one?

Not sure why anyone would desire to shoot one personally. These two little guys were very friendly around the Kowas Safaris camp this past August.

Never played with a meerkat. Doubt I will ever hunt one.

Seems a little like playing with a bushbaby. Problem with them as pets is not digging, it is climbing curtains, knocking things off shelves and taking a leak in your hair. Plus they are nocturnal so while your trying to sleep......

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
