Good Gun Deals This Week

Just picked a strange one. It’s a springfield krag custom done many years ago. Nice walnut stock with steel butt plate hand checkering. Barrel with standard sights looks aftermarket. Needs tlc, but got it very cheap. Anyone ever hear of one like this? It’s tickling something in my mind, but I can’t pull it out.

I’ve seen these from a variety of the old sporterizers. I’ve seen Sedgleys, and I think Niedner and other pre-war makers. I saw a recent one by Puglisi too.

Post pictures, maybe we can figure it out.

Thought I would post this just because it’s an 89B with no wait. Interesting to see a peep sight in lieu of express sights. On a double that is.

Just pulled pics on the net. Stock is definitely from that era. Looked at several sedglys and it’s very close. It’s worth saving I just haven’t figgered the plan yet. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Somebody got a good deal on this 9.3x74 double. Or great wood anyway. Closed yesterday.

I think they got the mid-range of the market. Private party sales of modern doubles (except Heyms and English makes) take a real beating.

a Chapuis like that could sell private party from $4800-$6700. A dealer would try to get $7000-$8000 and may succeed with consultation, credit card processing, layaway, and accepting trade-ins.

no mistakes, nice gun for a decent price, but for a private party sale on gun broker, it was in the midrange for what was a typical outcome.

I’ve found that gun auctions are about the worst place to sell a gun because that’s where people go to dump defective guns. It lowers the value because there is a risk premium.

that’s why I like AH, you will pay a touch more in the classified but buyer and seller can converse in detail and make a better informed decision without watching a countdown timer.

to buy a double requires $1000 of your time in the due diligence process. It means you could have $10,000 in time spent on 10 guns you researched on a gun auction that ultimately resulted in being outbid by fifty bucks in the last minute.

Or you talk to one expert on AH (hint hint, name starts with an R :D ), get a second opinion from a well known gun writer and then put a limit so you do not get outbid so easily!

From paragraph 3

But it is an excellent way to buy one, if well researched.

It’s a nice double. But that’s a lot of money for what it is. Have quite a few options on mid to upper $20s.
Agree…it certainly does not strike me as any type of good deal given what you can buy right now for that money

The worst part is that he’s in Canada asking for USD. Treason I tells ya!

I’d be curious to know if that is full price from Heym? I believe it’s new?

So the price is what it is for a new rifle (probably the most desirable model and maker on the market in that price range) that’s built like a tank to exacting standards, that you don’t have to wait for, from an extant maker that you can use monometal solids in.

It’s also not inappropriately light (maybe even a touch on the heavy side?) and has an acceptable length of pull for most people.

Personally, having said that, I would go the vintage English route if I had that budget.

I just went through the process. If one can swing mid/upper $20s, there’s a world of awesome vintage and 70/80s doubles, including some very well appointed side locks available. You just have to put in the time and research. Which is a big investment on top of the capital.

I do get pushing the easy button on a nice Heym - very fine guns and will serve you well. I thought hard about it myself. Ultimately, I just didn’t think the value was there if (and a big, if) you’re someone who will put the time and effort into the search.

Understood. Would you say then that Heyms are overpriced in general for what they are? If the one in question is indeed priced as new from Heym.

A somewhat similar situation to the new Mauser M98 as there are those that believe they are overpriced for what they are as well?

I’m not a Heym or double rifle expert by any standard. I wouldn’t say they are overpriced. I believe they are a newer manufactured, mechanically well functioning, mid range priced double rifle. I think what you see is what you get in a good way. If you paid 15k for a nicely dressed brand new Heym 10 + years ago, that’s a good bargain by today’s standards. And at today’s market that same double used would be around 14-17k (market, not asking), while a new one is quite a bit more.

Looks like Heym’s manufacturing costs and inflation have driven up the costs for a nicely dressed, brand new double into the mid 20s to low 30s. That’s a good bit more than a decade ago.

Vintage and high end used doubles tended to be quite a bit more expensive than the $15k Heym a decade + ago. But manufacturing costs and inflation have not impacted the vintage pricing in the same way. In fact, from what I’ve seen, the vintage double market is no higher, and in many cases lower than back then. So what may have been a 35-40k+ double a decade ago, you might find into the mid 20s, low 30s now with some due diligence. These doubles aren’t functioning any different and certainly aren’t any less awesome than there were a decade ago. They just aren’t currently a market favorite.

It’s just a value judgment. If I can have a vintage Westley, Holland, Lang, Watson, etc. that’s mechanically sound and also looks the part, I personally would rather have that than a new Heym. Same issue with a great Leige maker’s side lock. But I absolutely can see the other side of the coin. The Heym will likely be regulated with current factory ammo and be bomb proof (within reason).

A decade + ago, they were on two different playing fields money wise with the nicer vintage guns being much more expensive than a Heym. But today, there’s often not too much difference. Thus, I tend to appreciate the value of the older double in the current market.

So another one I put to see what people think. Nothing too fancy, in a caliber I have already, but looks like it is in very good shape and that price of 480€…

What do you think? I’m not too familiar with Zastava, but this looks like an extra nice example. Especially if I could get the buttpad replaced.

Zastava rifles were sold in the US under a variety of names like Interarms Mark X, Whitworth, Remington 798, Herters J9, Century International Arms and maybe some others. The factory made the Yugo M24 military rifles. This is the civilian version. The price is good.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.
