Do you immediately wonder if poaching might increase? I am not sure I agree with some of the official logic.

WHEN did you last have a bite of game meat? Worry not you can now have bushmeat on the menu regularly. If you are a big fan of the wild animals beef just beef up your wallet, since the government has endorsed the establishment of special butcheries specifically for bushmeat.

The move is aimed at enabling Tanzanians to harvest wild animals for selling and consumption, Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Dr Hamisi Kigwangalla revealed this at the weekend.

The new development follows the review on the guidelines on the sale and harvesting of bushmeat, per President John Magufuli's directive during his tour of Rubondo Island National Park on Lake Victoria, last year.

According to Dr Kigwangalla, the president's directive sought to remove the barriers that prevented Tanzanians from harvesting and selling bush meat. "Whoever wishes to start selling bushmeat needs to have a special ranch where he'll harvest and sell the wild animals at designated areas," explained the Minister shortly after inaugurating the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) board of trustees, here on Saturday.

The bushmeat trade will not only boost people's incomes but also deter poaching activities in protected areas, claimed Dr Kigwangalla.

"Tanzanians who wish to open such butcheries will be given special licences to run their businesses while the harvesting of game meat will only be done by professional hunters," hinted the Minister.

Unlike trophy hunting which is done seasonally, the new form of hunting wild animals for their flesh will be conducted throughout the year.

According to the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), people hunting for bushmeat have to be licensed by the relevant authorities and proof of the kill has to be presented afterwards in the form of skin, hooves and other non-edible animal parts.

Two years ago, Tanzania lifted a ban on hunting that had been imposed in October 2015 following abuse and misuse of hunting permits. The move heralded the first-ever online auctioning of 24 hunting blocks which kicked-off last November.

The sale involved the e-selling of vacant hunting blocks within Game Reserves, Game Controlled Areas and Open Areas. A total of 24 hunting blocks came under the hammer during the online auction.

Yep this will not stem the tide of poaching it will encourage it!

Oh man. Can you say indiscriminate killing? It’s interesting they are using the term “bushmeat.” That has some serious rhetoric attached to it.

Bushmeat and Ebola: CDC
Monkeys and bats are common sources of bushmeat.
Ebola is a rare and deadly disease that is spread through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a person who is sick with or died from Ebola.
Generally, Ebola is not spread by food. However, in Africa human infections have been associated with hunting, butchering, and processing meat from infected animals.
https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bushmeat.html

The index case in the 2017 Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DRC, was infected through close contact with bush meat, researchers determined.
According to the study, the researchers were able to determine that the outbreak was caused by a single spillover event. More specifically, they determined that the index case, a 45-year-old hunter, was infected through close contact with bush meat. They explained that he had butchered a wild boar after bringing the carcass back to the village, along with a nonhuman primate that he sold at a local market.

Ebola: Is bushmeat behind the outbreak?
Bushmeat is believed to be the origin of the current Ebola outbreak. The first victim's family hunted bats, which carry the virus. Could the practice of eating bushmeat, which is popular across Africa, be responsible for the current crisis?
The origin has been traced to a two-year-old child from the village of Gueckedou in south-eastern Guinea, an area where batmeat is frequently hunted and eaten.
Bushmeat or wild animal meat covers any animal that is killed for consumption including antelopes, chimpanzees, fruit bats and rats. It can even include porcupines and snakes.
In some remote areas it is a necessary source of food - in others it has become a delicacy.

I hate to be an alarmist, but......In 1957 Tanzania's population was under 9 million. In 2012 it was 43 million. In 2020 it will crest above 60 million. This human tidal wave is rivaled by very few other places on Earth. Eating "bush meat in some areas is essential" will have only one eventual result. When the meat is gone, then what? Another famine and plea for world help? There needs to be some sustainable alternative recreation introduced to Tanz..................FWB

Ugh, this doesn’t sound like a successful wildlife conservation story....

Maybe the movie "Idiocracy" was prophetic--the world is getting dumber!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
