Atlanta customs

OMG. I have combo locks, two pair of boots, and returning on a Monday... (06/23)...guess I'm screwed.

Go with four different locks, four different keys, four checked bags and forget which one has the boots.

All they do is spray your boots and put them in a small bad to go in your suitcase. It's easy. No drama or hype.

Of all airports one would believe that Ohare, located in the most unfriendly gun state of Illinois would be a PIA clearing customs with a firearm….Not….the easiest, no hassle of any airport that I have flown in or out of, including ATL..dog and pony show, Newark…not bad, but ridiculous time wise..with ORD being the best…your firearm comes out on the oversized bag belt. you pick up and proceed to the exit stopping only for customs to confirm your 4457 and on your way. No boot spray, no escorting you, no BS. I spent 6 hours dragging my firearm in a Pelican case waiting for a check in on Qatar in August thru Ohare and not one notice or second look from anyone, including police or airport security. Had my checked bag, carryon and pelican case…no issues. Amazing when considering Illinois‘ attitude on firearms. We can not buy a box of Ammo without possessing a FOID card issued by the state…permitting us to own, or even handle a firearm…anacronism at its best

What is an "Orange Firearms Tag" and where does one get them?
If I understand correctly, it's the orange form that certifies the firearm is unloaded when carried on aircraft.

Like the airport or not, ATL is one of the best run and most efficient major airports in the country. Customs and firearms are no issue.
Except it is the only place that I have had to have boots disinfected or displays a pair of seized Courteneys.

The one that i got from American Airlines this past June were just white with black lettering.

You get them when your check in at the ticketing desk

Boot dip/spray is a non issue, they do it in the same room while they are checking the serial number on your firearm and you grab a plastic bag containing boots on your way out the door.
what I did think was funny was that my non hunting wife was with me everywhere I went including the skinning shed and they didn’t ask for her footwear. Seems like an outdated or unnecessary procedure.

There was no boot spraying in Dallas this year, and they didn't get sprayed in Dulles back in 2015.

I feel like I got left out.

They didn’t do boots In New York when we went with delta and South African airlines in 2018 and guns were the same there as everywhere else BUT on re entry the customs line was very thorough. I don’t mind the increased security but we were also not in any hurry-

-My recent trip through Atlanta from SA:
-Global Entry is ++. Quick pass through customs.
-Donated my new Boots to Tracker. I wore slip ons rest of the way. No spraying necessary.
-Carry on luggage - No checked bags except ammo box and 2 Rifle case. Rifles and Pelican box came through quickly.
-There was a big back up with close to 20 people picking up rifles. For the most part they were organized. Just be patient and follow direction or the big customs guy yells at you!
-I used 2 simple keyed locks on my rifle case. I put Airline tape around the case as a seal. It was not broken in either direction.
-I used TSA combo cable style locks on my Pelican Ammo case. I brought extra locks for each case.
-You should have plenty of time.
-Even with a 7 hour layover (Thanks Delta!) my rifles still didn’t make it on my flight to SF. They were on the next flight and had to be delivered 4 hours later…
-AMEX or Priority Pass very helpful to shower/clean up, eat/drink, and relax in the Sky Lounge! +++

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
