.270 vs .280

What the heck is a 7.62x57 HC? Your own wildcat of 7x57/8x57 necked up/down?

The 7.62X57 Hoytcanon... 8X57 necked down to .308"... 180 Partition @ 2740, many, many head of game.

RWS makes the best brass available......
Yeah, nah. My experience with RWS brass is limited to the 8X68. All their case had to be well neck annealed or the necks split on first firing -Virgin brass- or on first firing on reloading factory ammo.

That looks a lot like it is 2 different rifles

Is it a necked up 7x57 or the like?

How does the 57case compare to a .30-06 case dimensions

It is two different rifles.... a blued/Walnut Ruger M77 Mark II and a stainless/Laminate Ruger M77 Mark II, the stainless is now in a B&C stock. The cartridge is a necked down 8X57, which has a greater capacity than would a necked up 7X57.

If memory serves the 30-03, then 30-06 were designed to beet the 8X57. The 06 is on a par with the 8mm but the 8 puts a bigger hole in things. A bloke in Aust used the 8X57 case, necked to 358 and some of the tapper blown out. He gets some good velocities out of this.

You are close. The experience that Teddy Roosevelt had against the Spanish with their 7x57 rifles led to an upgrade from the 30/40 Krag and the 03 Springfield.

I have always said the 270 win. was a really nice deer rifle not made for shooting elk up the ass but the 280 would not either shoot em in the right spot there both killers they say there is more custom rifles in 280 than other cal. accuracy trumps horse power every time. 1-270 1-280 1-280AI

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
