Trusting A Wild Animal - And Nearly Killed By Him

29+ years as a university zoologist/professor and I am still amazed that humans continually forget the cute, loveable "wild animals" they admire and give so many human qualities to will eventually demonstrate they really only possess three biological imperatives: 1. Will it eat me? 2. Can I eat...

Favourite quotes - Here's mine, Quite a long list. What's yours?

I always admired this one from the great old school safari guide and professional hunter, Bunny Allen. It rings true all over the world... "It's the camp smoke. Watching a fire. Seeing it sparkle. And the stars. You get the best out of people when they're sitting around a campfire. People...

    New Lipseys M77 .35 Whelen

Yes. They are supposed have 1:12 twist for heavier bullets. That rifle will very likely be a sweet shooter.

    New Lipseys M77 .35 Whelen

Both great old calibers and great platforms they are on. I used the Whelen's European cousin 9.3x62 in the Ruger African earlier in July and the 6.5x55 in a Ruger African on pronghorn this past October. Both were ordered direct from Lipsey's. I have a picture posted of them somewhere on this...

Used Lapua Mega factory ammo this past summer in South Africa (285 gr bullets) using a Ruger African. Longest shot was on a lechwe - 265 yds. Great ammo and great brass to reload with.

Welcome, Martin. I've had the pleasure to work in Scotland several times on salmon around Campbelltown and the Mull of Kintyre. Absolutely beautiful country. Good luck in Namibia.

You've Booked Your Hunt, Now It's Time To Break In Your Boots. Tips To Help Prepare For Your Adventure

I can attest to the superior service at African Sporting Creations. I ordered a second pair of Courtney boots last spring but the sizing on the new one pair was not quite right. I sent Jim an e-mail and another pair were on their way before I'd gotten the first pair back to the post office...

Pulling front or back trigger first

I just happened to be sharing a lodge with a "celebrity" in SA who had been bow hunting and said that since he'd grown up shooting pheasants in South Dakota, he knew all about such things as double triggers. I was transiting out that afternoon but went to the range in the morning with him and...

    Boer or Brit?

Perhaps when speaking of Boers mention that the rifle is a 7x57 Mauser. When speaking to the Brits just say its a 275 Rigby :) . Both the 303 and 7x57 you have are very nice rifles!

Hunting with dangerous game cartridges outside of Africa?

9.3x62 Mauser is my go-to on elk. I've hunted with that rifle for several years with much success. Its power to knock down elk is "authoritative". I've also used it on bears (2) and numerous feral hogs and trips to Africa. My 404J has only been used on paper and gongs outside Africa. I am...

    Most impressive trackers?

I've not had the pleasure to hunt in Africa other than in South Africa. That said, I was amazed by the Bushmen of the Kalahari as trackers. I was there this past July and had an opportunity to watch them apply their skills over several days.

    350 Magnum Rigby

Truly beautiful rifles and great ones to launch a "quest" for. To me, the sporting rifles manufactured at the beginning of the 20th century up until the second world war are works of art. Personally, my quest [read addiction] came 30+ years ago chasing .256 Mannlichers and Mannlicher-Shoenauer...

    Ideal Couger bullet?

Most folks around here who are specifically hunting lions use dogs to tree the cat then dispatch it with a big bore wheel gun or light caliber, easy to carry, rifle. The season is long. Alternatively, as stated above, many hunters carry multiple tags (black bear, lion, wolf, etc.) along with...

Wolves Have Been Released in Colorado USA

The debate has raged in Idaho since they were reintroduced here in 1995. Whatever side you fall on, one thing has become apparent over the years and that is the wolves have significantly changed the behavior patterns and habitat use of a wide range of potential prey species. Deer and elk in...

    Idaho Bound!

Having hunted in north Idaho all my life I can say with certainty that running into bears (black) or moose, or the occasional mountain lion or occasional wolf are somewhat commonplace if you spend any time sitting and glassing (this of course is dependent of the area you are in). If you are up...

Denys Finch Hatton rifle for sale

Sure thing. Go to their webpage then on to the catalog of the specific auction. Then put in the lot number or search term. For example: Lot #571 is a Westley Richards .318 Accelerated Express. On the right hand side you can see yellow buttons for a phone bid or sealed bid. You'll have to...

Denys Finch Hatton rifle for sale

I've purchased several rifles from RIA. You can bid live (via proxy) or send in a sealed bid. You can also watch the live bid over Zoom. It takes a bit of factoring because there are auction premiums and other costs to consider too. In all they are very efficient and package rifles very, very...

    Idaho Bound!

Congratulations! I have family in Orofino and Lewiston. We horseback hunt up around Dworshak and the Clearwater River area. Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

First, congratulations on taking your son hunting in Africa. We all need to keep reminding ourselves that they are the future - our future. As previous posters have indicated, a 7x57 will do the job within sensible distances and good shot placement. With my own son, who is now 30, I found...

    1903 Mannlicher Help

The slight shortness in length in some PPU ammunition has been a common cause of MS feeding issues. We need to remember that back in the day, these rifles were designed around a round nose bullet (typically 160 gr) and hand tuned to feed extremely well when the COL is correct. That's not to...

    1903 Mannlicher Help

Hi Aaron, Wheeler bits are too thick. So are most of the grace screw drivers. Brownell's "thin bits" fit very well. You'll need several different widths (0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3 and 0.34) to ensure you have a bit that spans the width of the different screws. Typically you can buy a whole set...

    404 Jeffery Caliber

I own a 404J built off a .375 MRC action. After a lot of custom work, It shoots quite well. It chronos 400gr Hornady and Woodleigh handloads just at 2300fps out of a 26" barrel. Would I say it kicks any less than any other .40 cal safari rifle? Not really. It's all relative. Rifle weight and...

Value of .416 John Rigby 1924 Model

Several things look out of place as noted by the folks above. Also, the bottom metal does not appear to be correct - but it's hard to tell. I'll posit that it is a BRNO 602 action as other have mentioned already. All that said, it is a beautiful rifle in immaculate condition if it is indeed...

I flew United from Newark to Joburg late June and was delayed getting out of Newark by 3 hours. Returning to Joburg on July 7, we landed and retrieved our weapons only to hear from other hunters that United had cancelled its flight out that day. The reason given was that the plane had to be...

    1903 Mannlicher Help

Aperture or "peep" sights are very cool on old MS rifles. Note the rear sight folds down to allow the peep sight (a Lyman model 36MS) to work with the front sight (i.e. you don't have to grind down the rear standing leaf as some do). This Lyman sight swings out of the way for the bolt. It...

    1903 Mannlicher Help

Agreed that function comes before form. That said, perhaps consider a side mount that would not cut a dove tail into the engraving on the receiver ring or drill holes in it. Some side mounts also allow you to co-witness the iron sights too if ever needed. Although most side mounts are quick...

Hi Aaron, Beautiful Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle. I've collected these for some time and love them. From what I can see your Model 1903 appears unadulterated. It may have been reblued or restocked but it was done very well. It is a single trigger model made on or after 1924 judging from the...

Follow up. I printed out the "Mauser Formula" post referenced above and gave it to my 'smith. He'd not seen it before either.
