Does anyone know if it is legal to take and use a drone in South Africa ?

I have seen a bit of drone video footage from RSA. Just watched a hunt video that showed some drone footage. You asking about as in a aid to hunting or for pics/video to remember the hunt with? There may be some sort of restrictions/licensing but it would appear legal to use.

Looks like I would hire a production company for my drone footage. 10 years on SA jail, sounds like a great time and all but I would still go with the 250-300 a day to have my hunt filmed by a professional that probably knows the laws and is permitted already. Beside the fact that traveling with a drone seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass. I am no drone expert so there may be much smaller units than what I see them videoing our jobs and flying refineries with, but I wouldn’t want to have all that extra bulk nor give them a really tempting item to steal at OR Tambo.
I do however think the drone footage on the hunt vids are spectacular.

Video drones are cool contraptions, but they're definitely under the spotlight, both in North America and internationally, for increased regulations. At the least, you'll most likely have to answer some questions upon declaration in SA.

I was just curious if anyone had taken and used one, its not that big a deal to me to have to worry with any extra hassle.

As far as I know the rules are as folows :
If you use a drone for commersial purposes you require to be registered and will require a license to fly. If you use the drone for recreational purposes, you do not require a license. You can not fly a drone in restricted air space which is close to airports. It is also wise to get permission from the land owner to fly on his property.
The above info was given by a licensed drone and chopper pilot - she does training - on a radio show in SA, 3 weeks ago.

I have a DJI phantom 4 and there is no issues.

Yes Drones are legal. For commercial use you need a operators license. For private use the drone must be flown within sight distance and I think restricted to 100 m in height.
