.270 vs .280

Unless you have a Custom barreled 270 with a fast twist rifling and that's been throated you can't shoot any heavier then 150s, so just about every 270 out there is slow twist.
Indeed. I believe the heavier bullets available now were meant for the 6.8 western and .27 nosler which have more appropriate twist.

Yes, guys have been building fast twist 270s for some time but didn't have much bullet choice over 150s that weren't custom made. I think all new guns should be made with faster twists, even if you don't shoot heavy bullets it good for the copper bullets.

It's probably more to do with pressure, same psi there probably close. Think you can shoot the 280 in the 7x64 guns to.
That would be interesting to confirm that. I'm sure it's not recommended but my understanding is they are very similar but I have not compared the dimensions.

Like most things I'll most likely catch flack on this......but here goes.....

(Rhetoricaly) What can't you kill with a 270 and need a 280 for?.....

IF one is into maximum powder charge reloading, various bullet weights and this-that-and another....blah..blah..blah...

It boils down to you have a 270 ....why do you need a 280....their isn't a significant agruement to be made...justifying which is better.

Just my 2 cents
More to the point....what CAN you kill with a .280 that you "CAN'T" kill with a .270

Answer....nothing

It truly is splitting hairs between those two calibers.

In fact, I think .007 of an inch (.277 vs .284) is right about the width of a hair

Im a big fan of the 270 I prefer the 270 because it has far more factory support with more available rifles and factory ammo options. The 280 is fantastic and can be loaded with heavier bullets which if using for tougher or larger game I would favor and it shoots very flat with 140s so in theory to me it is the better cartridge wish it had the factory support the 270 has. But the 270 being used for the same purpose one would select a 280 for and doing such an excellent job with this intended use I don't think we will ever see the 280 achieve similar success and support even though in my opinion it is a slightly better cartridge.

If you really want to do it right you just do the .280 AI

That's Ackley Improved not Artificial Intelligence for the youngsters ;)

More efficient than the 7mm Rem Mag (less powder, 22" barrel) but treads right up towards it.

Gotta be a handloader though. Or pay Kenny Jerrett to load ammo for you after you have one of his Beanfield Rifles built. Which are excellent for plains game.

That is not the current situation. Nosler and Hornady make factory 280 AI ammunition. https://ammoseek.com/ammo/280-remington-ackley-improved

Disclaimer, I have not handled the .280 or 7x64. I read up on both and got the impression they are very similar in dimensions making them look almost identical

As it was I was looking for info on the .280a.i which I settled on.

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
