    .45-70 for Elephant

I'd forgotten about this thread altogether. How in the world did anyone even find this thread? My opinion hasn't changed in the year and a half since I wrote this. Just because there is better bullets now doesn't mean that you can ethically hunt a Elephant with the 'ol .45-70. I just got in an...

    Bighorn Sheep

Sounds like 3 very good choices. The 6.5-06 and .270 WSM are VERY good choices and the .300 WSM is hardly a step behind with 150 TTSX's.

Awesome and congrats! What cartridge will you be using on this hunt?

    Deer Hunting with .223??

NO, Doe are SMALLER than Buck! A doe is, in my area, at least 50 lb's (often 75 lb's) lighter than a buck. Bucks have more fat, thicker muscles, and MUCH, MUCH thicker neck fat. Doe aren't as hard too kill, thereby making it more ethical to hunt them with smaller calibers. Don't be mistaken, my...

Hunting Officially Banned in Botswana from 2013

This is very sad. Unfortunately, in America we are under the onslaught of the anti's as well, and so far we've been winning but for how long? With the way people my age think I'm scared, to put it frankly...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

I agree. I am a former .270 hater converted to a .270 lover. I got fed too many stories by family members and internet people that it wasn't even a good deer cartridge. My dad convinced me that it probably was perfect for me considering my age, and I haven't looked back since. Now, back to the...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

That will change in a few years. I've talked to people who work in places like Ruger and Marlin, and they say the .270 Winchester is outselling EVERYTHING over .224 caliber! Step aside .30 cal, here comes the .270 Winnie.

    Deer Hunting with .223??

Most people would be far better off with a .223 on Deer than there macho .300's. The shooting world is changing, bullets are changing, everything is changing... The problem is some people aren't changing with it...

    Rifle for 14 year old

My +1 reccomendation would be .270 or 7-08, but .308 is #2 on my list. I'm 14 and almost 15 and I use a Ruger M77 MKII in .270 Winchester, it fits me absolutely perfect and because of that I'm effective with it off hand. As of even 2 years ago (even a little sooner), I told my dad that Ruger...

    Broken Scope or Dirty Barrel

If it isn't because something is losse, then it probably has a rough spot in the barrel. I've heard of some guns that have a rough spot right from the factory, and it will shave off copper from every round. This will cause accuracy to go too pot after about 20 shots.

    Deer Hunting with .223??

The only reason it doesn't have a place in my battery is that I have no use for it. In my area you would be hard pressed to find anywhere to hunt small game with a .223, as there are way too many houses. It didn't used to be that way, but I wasn't alive to see those days. I'm switching over to...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

I have no beef with people hunting deer with .22 cf's, as long as they use the right bullet. I personally wouldn't, but too each their own.

Same goes for Pennsylvania. You can hunt deer with a .17 Rem if you want too, just no rimfires.

    6.5x55mm for Plains Game?

DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER! All these people think they need sub-moa groups to go hunting, when they copuld've easily killed it with 1 1/2 MOA rifle as well . Hang, they most likely could've killed 90% of their game with a rifle that shoots 2 1/2 MOA as well (while people gasp and choke on their...

I frankly think those guys that I mentioned were full of crap. I don't see how they could achieve that or why they would want to. Like you said if you want magnum velocity just get a magnum.

    .308 Win. for Antelope?

I was reading this one forum and there was several guys claiming that they get 2900 fps out of a 180 grain load. I never would try such a thing, but there are those who claim to do it. One guy even claimed that he gets 3000 fps out of a 180 grain in a .30-06! It is very easy to claim such a...

    .270 Winchester for plains game

I don't know where we would be hunting, as I've said I'm 14 so I'm not the financial man, so I really can't tell you. I can't even tell you when we would be going, because I really don't know. Joseph is indeed my uncle, but I don't ever remember saying that they kill christians in Zimbabwe. I did say that they do confiscate land and sometimes kill white ranchers. I don't beleive I ever said that they discriminate against christians, though I could be mistaken. I have talked to some...

    .308 Win. for Antelope?

The reason why the .308 and .30-06 are so close in performance is because the .308 is loaded to a higher pressure than the .30-06. When handloaded, the '06 has quite an edge over the .308. Some guys on the internet brag about pushing 180's out of their .30-06 at close too 2900 fps, I personally...

    6.5x55mm for Plains Game?

If the Remington 700 was junk it wouldn't be selling do well. Except for the rare bolt handle snapping off, there really isn't many problems with the rifle. It is the same as any other rifle in that price range, 99 out of 100 times it is going to be a great rifle. 1 rifle out of 100 is bound to...

    .270 Winchester for plains game

AlSpeath, your views of the .270 are clearly diluted by your apparent infatuation with the .30-06 and 7X57 Mauser. The funny thing is, The 7X57 and the .270 are identical in killing power under 250 yards, out past which the .270 surpasses it, yet to use the .270 is an obamination worthy of...

    6.5x55mm for Plains Game?

The Remington 700 is not a dangerous firearm by any means. I personally don't own one, but my father owned one in .22-250 and that gun was accurate reliable, and rather pretty and he often says that he shouldn't have ever sold that rifle. I know other people who own or have owned Remington 700's...

    Ruger #1 .308 For Kid

The Winchester FWT compact sounds like a good choice. If you're going to let him hunt Elk sized with a .308 with 165's, I highly reccomend something similar to a Sierra Gameking or a Nosler Partition. These 2 bullets will help to make up for the 165's reduced penetration in comparison to 180's...

    Ruger #1 .308 For Kid

There is not a load that the 7X57 surpasses the .308 in killing power with. The .308 can be loaded with everything up to 200 and 220 grain Nosler Partitions and that trumps whatever 175 the 7x57 can put out there. The 7X57 is a wonderful cartridge, but among its few fans there seems to be a...

    Ruger #1 .308 For Kid

The .308 will do just fine on Moose, as would the .270. Unless you're thinking Alaskan moose, then that's a different story. My dad shot a Moose in Vermont with the .30-06 and it went over just fine. The .308 is almost identical to the .30-06, so it would've done just fine as well. There isn't a...

    Ruger #1 .308 For Kid

I think that either the .270 (my personal favorite cartridge), .7mm-08, or the .308 would be a great choice for him. The 3 of them are almost identical in recoil and in killing power. I personally would choose either the .270 or .308 though, due too ammo prices. I agree that a single shot is...

What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

Very interesting, I didn't know that. Maybe it isn't quite as bad as I painted it out too be, but I still don't want to use it, call me a scaredy cat or whatever. No, I have never used Norma 8X57 ammo, but I have read bad stuff before on the internet about pressure issues. Then again, those...

What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

Norma ammo is still not within SAAMI specifications and therefore I don't want to use it. Your father, luckily, never had a pierced primer because if he would've he would've been in for a world of hurt. The Savage 99 is not designed to handle the pressures that Norma ammo operates at, as not...

The 20th Century's Top Rifle Cartridge

We can argue about this until we're all blue in the face, but without sufficient proof (for either side) it is impossible to prove it either way. Both the .303 and the .30-06 have killed freighter loads of game, and we all can believe what we want about which has killed more but none of us have...

What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

I have already owned an 8X57 and it is a fine cartrdige, but I want something with a little more punch. In order to get velocities over 2500 fps with a 196 grain bullet, you have to buy Norma ammo. I am concerned with the high pressures that Norma ammo operates at, and wouldn't cherish the isea...

What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

I don't think I'll ever buy one of the 8MM mags, but an 8MM-08 or 8MM-06 would be nice. I would probably get a Ruger M77 rebarreled, as I love that particular rifle. I would probably handload some 200 grain Nosler ballistic tips for deer and maybe Nosler partitions for the bigger stuff. That...

The 20th Century's Top Rifle Cartridge

That is what I think. The .303 probably has killed as much game as the .270, maybe a little more. Soon the .270 will have killed a lot more it as it kills the 2nd most game animals every year, at least that is what I hear.
  39. T

The 20th Century's Top Rifle Cartridge

I have to disagree, a lot of game animals have been killed in America and the .303 is not a very popular cartridge here. The .30-06 kills more game animals every year than any other cartridge in the world. The .303 has been lagging behid the '06 for quite some time. The .303 British is largely a...

    Partition lack of love?

Nosler redisigned the Nosler Ballistic Tip, they added "hunting" on too the end of the name. The change they made was a thicker copper jacket. I am not talking about the E-tip, I am talking about the Nosler ballistic tip. The old ones used to basically blow to pieces inside of the animal, these...

    Partition lack of love?

Nosler redesigned the ballistic tip this year if I'm correct. The new Nosler Ballistic Tip hunting's have a thicker copper jacket and they penetrate much better. They still expand very rapidly, but they don't go to pieces like the old ones. Go to Noslers website and check out the new NBT hunting.

    Partition lack of love?

A deer that I got 4 years had pieces of lead all over the place. There were even pieces in some of the Cheeseburgers my dad made with them, and I didn't die. I spit the lead pieces out a nd kept on eating, and I'm still alive and well.

    Partition lack of love?

I think that the reason why the NP is rarely spoken of is because of these new fangled Barnes TSX bullets. Everyone on the internet uses these TSX's it seems. Personally, I like bullets that shed some of their weight, so I don't care for the TSX's. I would rather use the Nosler Partition than...

    Shooting Slump!!!

I'd say that either you had a bad day or it was wind related. A 5 mph breeze can open up a group a half inch at 100 meters and a 10 mph breeze can open it up 1.10 inches. Some serious shooters use wind flags because of this. If it wasn't the wind, then I'd say you had an off day. Either you...

    17 Remington in Africa

I used too use a .22-250 with 50 grain v-max's, that was one accurate bullet! Sadly, I bought that gun several months before there was any good chuck hunting, and saw another gun that looked too shiny too pass up....... Worst mistake I've made in a LOOOOOONG time........

    17 Remington in Africa

I personally would reccomend the .22-250 for your friend. The .223 is a military round and airlines and other countries are really weird about military cartridges. C'mon Dollar vs. Rand!

If you consider Bush a conservative, I don't. He was a RINO, not a conservative. Bachman said that she wants to pull us out of all these wars, so she can fix the US economy. BTW, In the recent vote to cut funding to the Libyan war, more republicans voted to cut funding than DEMONRATS. The...

    C'mon Dollar vs. Rand!

I highly doubt the US dollar is going to rebound. I truly believe we are heading into a great depression, that will make our first look fun.
