Would a 450 grain .458 Win Mag be a perfectly acceptable standard for elephant?

So given that the Barnes 450 grain FN solid and the CEB 450 grain solids have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, it stands to reason that a shorter 450 grain lead core solid, also with .306 SD, should work fine as well. Maybe I have it in my head that retaining 2150 fps is more important...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

If you forced me out of .375H&H, it would have to be .458 Win Mag in a Model 70 Safari Express for me, though I would really have to work up to the recoil. I'd run loads from 250 to 500 grains depending on what was needed. I think it would be a blast to use with Trail Boss and light bullets...

Would a 450 grain .458 Win Mag be a perfectly acceptable standard for elephant?

Could a 450 grain solid or Swift A-frame out of a .458 Win Mag be a Goldilocks loading that hits 2200-2300 fps without load compression, and still provide everything needed for Elephants? IE could one safely let go of the 500 grain .470 Nitro Express paradigm, given the advances in bullet...

Blaser R8 Professional: how to shorten length of pull?

So I've got a synthetic R9 Professional now and I do like it a lot, but find the14.5" LOP a bit lanky compare to the usual 13.5" LOP on my Winchester Model 70. I don't understand why the standard stock is so long. I've looked at the other synthetic options, and the short synthetic stock is...

Blaser Q: loose front sight blade

Hi all, I bought a new Blaser R8 barrel and the front sight rattles faintly in its seat. Is this a normal thing to tell me I need to sight it in and out some tension on it? Thanks!

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Mostly to serve as a heavy stable platform for sighting in scopes on given barrels (especially the .375H&H) and to up the recoil tolerance when target shooting with .308/.30-06. Good to hear that the forends are stiff enough.

    POLL: Preferred Big Bore Cartridge?

I agree, and posted that I think given the changes in paradigms with modern ammunition, that this can be neatly done in 2mm increments: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/small-medium-and-large-bore-thoughts-on-a-metric-definition.75326/ Why not: Up to 6 mm (0.236 in): Very Small Bore /...

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Thanks. Now the question is whether it's worth the money to gain the weight and a .458 Lott option I'll likely never use, or if I should just buy a 16oz kickstop for a 17mm stock and be happy maxing out with .375H&H magnum.

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Thanks, I forgot to mention using a bipod in my post (corrected now). Thinking that the additional gap would be a cooling advantage for informal target shooting, as would the extra weight, but want to make sure the thing wouldn’t be flexing around on a bipod given the decreased thickness...

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Hi all, Considering a Blaser R8 Professional Hunter with the polymer stock and 22mm barrel channel. If I use it with a standard 17mm barrel, is the forend still stiff enough for target shooting using a bipod with the free-floated barrel? Thanks

Blaser R8: lowest QD scope mount?

I find that the factory bases and low 1" rings are still on the tall side for a good cheek weld. Can you recommend something lower? Perhaps EAW or some such? Hopefully still QD but I would carry an Allen key or screwdriver if I had to. What's the lowest you can get in any diameter?

Any tips for using iron sights with failing eyesight?

Williams makes a 'Twilight Aperture' that may be a good balance here. https://shop.williamsgunsight.com/ecommerce/p/aperture--twilight-001442

Any tips for using iron sights with failing eyesight?

IIRC, small apertures increase depth of field and sharpness. This is why pinhole cameras work with no glass.

Is the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express too light?

People talk about recoil headaches, detached retinas, tinnitus, bad shoulders etc. I’m starting to get the feeling that any recoil and muzzle blast past a reasonable solution for the task at hand is incurring more pain for no reason, and probably even counterproductive.

Any tips for using iron sights with failing eyesight?

I'm in the Aimpoint camp, then a good aperture rear sight. The Blaser barrels work OK as the rear sight is forward to facilitate scope objectives, which puts it closer to the plane of the front sight and more safely out of presbyopic range. Smart.

Firearms and cartridges that everyone should have in their collection.

FN/BACO Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 in your favorite flavor. Anschutz 1710 .22 LR along with some Eley or Lapua match to reset your perspective on rimfire accuracy. A lithe 20 gauge side by side of decent quality One of the match grade 10/22 clones e.g. Volquartsen, Kidd etc. A CRF .375H&H...

Is the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express too light?

If you want a lighter M70 Safari Express .375H&H, you could always put an aluminum floorplate on it and drop it in a McMillan. I think that might save a pound or so. The floorplate would be at least a half pound reduction. A little weight in the barrel never hurt off-hand shooting either.

Is the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express too light?

I found the .375H&H Safari Express a pleasure to shoot. The .375H&H Alaskan is a fair bit more abrupt: to the point where I thought a steel floorplate / trigger guard might mellow it out a bit. Haven't shot the .458 WM yet. Hoping it's not as brutal as the Ruger RSM in .458 Lott/WM I sold...

Small, Medium and Large Bore: Thoughts on a Metric Definition

Sure and I agree. But a .45 ACP is still a large bore and a .500 S&W could be a very large bore, though you probably wouldn't want to stop an elephant with either. Qualify with 'big bore pistol' or 'very large bore revolver'. Is a 10mm auto a 'big bore pistol'? Some in Alaska carry them for...

Small, Medium and Large Bore: Thoughts on a Metric Definition

Nothing in your post seems to contradict the categories I have set out. The 2mm increments actually seem to agree with Taylor because: .236 (6mm) to .315 (8mm) small bores coincide with Taylor's 'light rifles'. .375 up to .394 (10mm) are indeed the last of the medium bores. A .318 Westley...

Small, Medium and Large Bore: Thoughts on a Metric Definition

Was thinking about what constitutes a small, medium or large bore these days in context of modern cartridge capabilities even in older case designs, and in context of what's generally available today. Why not: Up to 6 mm (0.236 in): Very Small Bore 6 mm (0.236 in) to 8 mm (0.315 inches): Small...

Blaser R8 ring height to clear windage/elevation turret of typical 1" Leupold scopes?

Perfect thanks! To clarify on the 30mm fit: it was an Aimpoint H30L that didn't fit, not a Leupold. I'll get some 1" rings and put a Leupold on the mount.

Blaser R8 ring height to clear windage/elevation turret of typical 1" Leupold scopes?

Hi all, I have figured out that 30mm low rings are too low for the bottom of the windage/elevation turret housing, and I need medium height rings. This brings on another question: What 1" ring height will I need to clear the windage/elevation turret housing of a typical VX3 1.5-5x20mm or...

Do you or have you participated in Competitive Shooting?

Weekly informal offhand rimfire and centrefire competition for about three to four years. Also weekly 20 yard bullseye for something like a year and a half, as well as pretty regular skeet. This is all great practice in safe handling as well as the fundamentals. Covid put a kink in things but...

    Blaser R8 receiver question

Thanks for replying. Seems I'm concerned about a non-existent issue. Come to think of it, semi-auto pistols like the Beretta 92 and the Sig P226 have existed for eons with steel slides and aluminum frames. The 92 is one of the most reliable pistols out there. I think I'll try a very light...

Ruger safari magnum. Good, Bad and Ugly?

I had an RSM in .458 Lott and one in .375 H&H over a decade ago. Both brand new. They were gorgeous rifles. The .375 had won the wood lottery: tiger stripe from front to back. The .458 developed a hairline split in the tang after four rounds. Both of them were promptly sold, the .375 without...

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

Lots of way more beautiful rifles above than one would commonly pick off the rack. I'm astounded by the custom craftsmanship. But for stuff one commonly encounters on the gun shop rack, I'd have to go with the Model 70 Supergrade and Safari Express rifles for standing head and shoulders above...

Model 70 Which Era is Best?

IMO the 2008-present FN built ones from North Carolina and now Portugal assembly are the best. IIRC they incorporate some of the safety improvements post 64 with all of the best attributes of pre-64, modern materials and metallurgy, a better trigger, and modern scope mounting capability. The...

    Blaser R8 receiver question

Hi everyone, I'm looking at the Blaser R8 as a rugged rifle. Could you tell me if the bolt rails are steel running on aluminum raceways? Should I be concerned about wear in the receiver raceways? I've searched a tonne and can't seem to find any commentary on this. Thanks!
