See pages 4-6 here. I believe what you need may be easy under current U.S. regulations. I can't speak to German requirements.

Voere 98 Mauser Detachable Magazine conversion kit?

I had looked into CDI before, but I like the Voere magazine release better. I know that Pacific Tool and Gauge is known both for high quality and somewhat lacking customer service. That may be why you've had a hard time reaching them. I did take a look at their site tonight, and their prices...

Ruger No.1 As and reloads for the .35 Whelen

I also use IMR 4064. My preferred bullet has always been 250gr. Kodiak bonded bullets (made in Alaska), but as they are no longer available (I bought up the last of them directly from the manufacturer before he passed), I will likely switch to Swift A-Frames when I run out.

Voere 98 Mauser Detachable Magazine conversion kit?

Hi, Chris. I originally posted this in 2019 (before the world went crazy). I'm still very interested and a little surprised at how difficult it is to get these in the U.S. The rifle I had at the time of my original post was a previously sporterized Mauser (VZ-24, actually) in 30-06 that I...

    35 Whelen vs 338-06

I think there is negligible real world difference between the 338-06 and 35 Whelen. My personal preference is the 35, but either will perform well on grizzly if that is your eventual goal. If you're considering a rebore, I might lean toward the 338-06 depending on how heavy the barrel you...

    35 Whelen

How do you define "old?" I'm 46. Most of my hunting rifles are are 20-40 years older than I am. I have a particular affinity for Swedish Mausers, and I firmly believe everyone should own at least 1 sporterized Mauser. My younger son (15) is the only 1 of my kids that really hunts these days...

    Resurrecting the 270 Win

The vast majority of my hunting shots have been under 100 yards (truthfully, probably under 50 yards), but the 2 longest shots I have ever taken (1 slightly under 400 yards, 1 slightly over) were at a moose and a caribou with a 270. I would not have taken either shot if I thought I was going to...

    Questions About the CZ 550

My CZ550 is named "Barack" after the greatest gun salesman in American history. I've been hunting with Barack since 2009 and couldn't be more satisfied. I agree with Code4 that the factory trigger and bedding are fine. I've actually used the set trigger on a couple of longish shots on moose...

    Crf Rifles Encountered While Hunting?

All of my bolt actions are CRF. I don't necessarily think that PF is a bad thing, but I think that CRF rifles in general tend to be of higher quality than PF rifles. I'm sure some will take exception to this, but if a manufacturer is cutting costs by producing a PF action instead of CRF...

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

I can't speak to leopard hunting, so I won't pretend to. I can speak to the 30-30. Mine is an early '50s Model 94 with a Williams peep sight. My youngest son has an identical one a couple years newer than mine. It is, of course, an excellent deer rifle. I bought mine specifically to use on...

    CZ 550 action screw torques

First off.....congrats on the new rifle. I simply don't think you can go wrong with a CZ 550. One of my big regrets is that I didn't buy more of them back in the '90s when my local gun shop was selling them in the $400-$500 range. Unfortunately, I was young and poor at the time. I've not...

    Resurrecting the 270 Win

Oddly enough, even though I see 270 ammo on the shelves at local stores, I've never come across another Interior Alaska hunter that regularly uses it. I imagine it may be more popular in Southeast than in the Interior. Personally, I think it is the ideal caribou and sheep gun, and a good moose...

    9.3X62 for Cape Buffalo?

I did that about a year ago. They did respond, but said that they could not ship to the US....even for gun parts. I have friends in Canada, and eventually I may just buy through them, but it is frustrating. You'd think there would be enough of a market in the US for someone to pick them up.

    9.3X62 for Cape Buffalo?

I've had the same problem. I'd very much like to buy some of Voere's stuff, but they're nearly impossible to find in the US except for the odd used one you can find online. There are distributors in Canada, but that's the best I've been able to find so far.

    My son’s first rifle

Very nice. I started both of my sons out with an old pre-64 Winchester 94 in 30-30 with a peep sight. It keeps them honest. They say that here in Alaska the farther from Anchorage you get, the smaller the rifles get. There is a lot of truth to that. Within its limitations, the 30-30 is a...

Help with decisions on a rifle build

I use 250 gr Kodiak bonded bullets in my current Whelen. There is no doubt that it packs a wallop, but there is nothing I hunt (including Alaskan grizzly & brown bears) that I wouldn't feel equally confident going after with either a 35 Whelen or 338-06. They're both perfectly capable, and my...

Help with decisions on a rifle build

I have 1 35 Whelen and I'm building another one, but I can't say that it is better than the 338-06. My dad hunts with a 338-06, and there is no significant real world difference between the 2. I used to think the 338-06 might have an advantage in bullet selection, but I don't think that is...

I actually don't think US customs would be a problem. My issue so far has been finding a supplier willing to ship to the US. The federal government doesn't regulate magazines, and neither does the state of Alaska, so I have no worries there. It's just a matter of getting them.

    35 Whelen rate of twist?

    GEW 98 vs. K 98?

Look for VZ-24 actions made by Brno. Even ones made during the war seem to have a good reputation. I have one that I stripped off a very "well used" 30-06 sporter. The action has the Guatemalan crest, indicating that it is from the 1930s. I turned it into a very heavy 22-250 that shoots...

    Best .338

I have a 35 Whelen. My dad has a 338/06. Under real world hunting conditions, I don't think there's any significant difference between them. I'd give the edge to the 338/06 due to bullet selection, but aside from that 1 will do everything the other will do.

    Where to hunt Caribou?

The Fortymile herd is probably not your best bet if you're thinking of traveling to Alaska for what might be a once in a lifetime caribou hunt. The hunt is on a quota system with different opening dates for residents vs. non-residents, there are no guarantees how long it will stay open each...
