Can someone tell me the series of events from when I step off the plane to I'm in the outfitter's vehicle for transportation? I'm using the Riflepermits.com meet and greet but my hunting partner is not.

Thank You.

Welcome to AH, SPAD.

-You go through passport control
-Pick up your luggage
-Customs never bothered me
-Go to SAPS office (Police) where you will wait for your guns to arrive and proceed with the paperwork.

I hope I didn´t miss anything.

Hi SPAD,

Can I assume you will be arriving at OR Tambo Airport in Jo'burg? We recommend Riflepermits.com to all of our clients traveling with their personal guns... When you come out of the baggage claim area you will walk directly into a big circular atrium where you will be met by the meet & greet person from Riflepermits.com. I believe that they will have a sign with their logo and your name on it. They will take you to the SAPS office where you will be given priority over those not using an import service. They basically walk you through the entire procedure which will be much faster with them representing you.

This may present a problem for you if you are traveling with a partner who is not using the same service. If the line is long, he may be waiting a good deal longer than you. It can really depend how many hunters are arriving on your same flight with guns to clear, and also when you arrive at the office. I would highly recommend that he use the same service so you can both get processed quickly and on your way. Otherwise, the money you spent for convenience may be for nothing if you are waiting on him to clear his guns.

He couldn't make the 25 day cut-off time to use the Riflepermits.com "Meet and Greet". He is/was waiting on a custom rifle to arrive, so he couldn't do the 4457 before sending in the paperwork.

Did he check with Rifle Permits? They don't really need a full 25 days.

Nyati has it exactly as I experienced things on both trips.

I think Nyati missed a step. Since SPAD has hired someone to get his rifle permits, the steps will be as follows:

Get off the plane
Go through passport control (about as straightforward as these things get)
Pick up Luggage
Go through the green lane for customs
Leave the luggage/customs and enter the arrivals area
Someone will be waiting with your name on a piece of paper
They will take you to the SAPS Firearms Office to pick up the firearms.
Get the firearms and away you go.

Up until this point, your friend will just follow you. Once you are both in the office, he will have to fill out or sign and deliver all of the paperwork needed to get the permits.

I agree with Wapiti - see what Riflepermits can do - they don't really need all of the time they ask for. But even if it's too late, it won't generally take too long to do all of the paperwork on the spot, so long as you have everything you need (if your friend shows up with what you sent to Riflepermits, he should have everything he needs).

I use AfricaSky to get my permits and it's always worked like this.

I think I'd tell the gent who meets you from Riflepermits.com what the situation is. I'd then ask him if there's "something" he could do to help speed up the process for your partner. If there is and he gets your buddy through quickly, your partner should tip and tip very well. He then should buy you a beer....;)

Sound advice Phoenix Phil!

SPAD,

Just one more thing that I can think of. If you are flying SAA you need to sign for your rifles in the luggage area. You don't get them then but do have to sign for them. If you're flying Delta you don't have this step.

Rifle Permits will send you all this information and more. I used them in June. Good people.

Have your friend fill out all the paperwork before you leave but don't sign it until the SAPS officer tells him to.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
