Ha! Ha! Ok, how about trying to cook a bag of DRIED beans in a pot of water at 9K feet elevation over a 4" burner back backer stove? And, NO OTHER FOOD available. Yep, that was my first trip with my father in law. When we didn't catch any brookies the first evening, and he didn't bring any other food! THAT was dinner for three of us. We ate them half raw after attempting to cook them for two hours. Except for the burrito debacle, that NEVER happened again as I brought the food in MASS quantities after that fiasco.

I understand. Food needs to be decided on beforehand and by those who will eat it. When I was 16 I elk hunted on CO. One guys wife bought a big pack of cheap corn tortillas for us. They were so bad the horses stomped them into the dirt. I ate so much shells and cheese that I didn't eat it for almost 3 years.
 
Kevin my go to non meat dish is Mango achar and cheese on toast.
I have an Indian friend whose mother makes pretty decent achar. The best local brand to try is Packo which should be available in Zim.

Another Downeast favorite is Needhams: mashed potatoes, powdered sugar, vanilla, coconut, butter, cooked in a double boiler and dipped in a mix of semi sweet and bitter chocolate. To die for. If any of you chocolate lovers want the recipe, I'll post it.

Fried onion , mashed potatoes and fresh Kudu livrer.
Pickeld cucumbers(sliced) with mustard seeds. (As a side dish) The Germans call it Senfgurken. Nice in summer

I can taste that in my imagination John, mango achar is the best.

Boveril from Zim?? Ewwwwwwww...it's an acquired taste that I've def NOT acquired....LOL It looks like the base for bone marrow sauce (like the brown sauce used on meats in chinese restaurants,) only it's not finished yet. I bet Kevin P. has had it!! View attachment 445066

Needhams
3/4 to 1 cup real mashed potatoes, not instant.
1/2 tsp salt.
2 lbs powdered sugar.
1 stick real butter.1 large pkg shredded coconut.(12-14 oz)
2 tsp vanilla extract- add this once you take the above mixture off the stove.
Melt butter in the top of a double boiler and add the remaining ingredients. Mix well until everything is completely combined.
Remove from heat, mix in vanilla and pour into an 8x12 or larger pan.
Line the pan with aluminum foil and butter the pan.
Spray Pam over foil. This step helps get them out of the pan and helps with cleanup
Put in fridge to set and harden.
When firm cut into squares and dip in chocolate mix.
Cut them up, put on a cookie sheet and return to fridge to dry the edges of the squares and firm them up for dipping.
Dip
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips.
4 squares bitter/unsweetened chocolate(about 4 oz.)
1/2 cake paraffin wax.
Chop bitter chocolate and wax into small pieces and put everything into the top of double boiler to melt.
Dip needhams and put on wax paper lined cookie sheet and put in fridge to set the chocolate.
If you have extra chocolate, follow above dipping steps.
 
Bagel, cream cheese, & lox. You can also add tomato, raw red onion, or capers.

Pickled Brussel sprout blue cheese stuffed mushroom in a Martini.

Simple pleasures are the best.

Just pre-boil them, throw in a pan, some butter, onions, salt and dig in!

Hmmm...Yes, Sparingly IS the operative word. I was given no forewarning by a smirking Zim PH, and it was slathered onto toast as if it were the finest fruit preserves! Come to think of it, I used no butter, either. I'll give it another try sometime...also there appears to be a chicken or veggie variant?? Put into better perspective, this is the FIRST thing I ate upon waking up for my very first trip to Zimbabwe, so some healthy skepticism set in. Clearly i was deserving of some jovial punishment. It (the Country) was a wonderful experience, as always, with great people (3x so far; still going!)

All that said, it's theorized in some circles that past wars may have been won by officers making deals with soldiers "You win this and you'll never have to consume Bovril again!"
