ZIMBABWE: Charlton McCallum Safaris Trophy Bull Elephant Hunt Report April 2015

Hello Frostbite,

One Alaskan to another: Well Done Sir.

After watching Zimbabwe PH Gary Hopkins double twice in a row with Cal's .450 No2 NE, (while Gary was visiting AK), I am with you and the others who shoot rear trigger/left barrel first.

Incidentally, Mr. Hopkins is not just a tall, physically fit looking chap, he is tough as well.

He made no complaint after the big rifle doubled twice in a row, then went right on to shoot other rifles, including a full magazine of factory loaded .460 Wby cartridges as fast, as he could run the bolt on a custom Brno 602 Magnum Mauser.

Well any way, your experiences sound like everything that an elephant hunt should be and all of us reading your report are envious.

Some might say that elephant is one of the only real valid reasons to use a double.

I think there are other reasons to use a double but certainly elephant is number one.

I repeat, Well Done Sir.

So long for now,
Velo Dog.

Thanks for the excellent pictures and stories, I love your hunting reports!

James Durnford Chalton navigated the cruiser expertly along the two track road while swatting Tsetse’s from his lime green mankini clad testicles. I suddenly awoke with a startle from my Malarone driven nightmare.

Glad I don't use Malarone.:D

My side brain shot missed the mark but my second barrel did indeed find the heart lung area....

I dreamed of this hunt for some time. I practiced!! I continually imaged how this would go....

All my planning, imagery, and practice meant little once the lead flew....

You are not the only one to have watched Buzz's videos, practiced many times on the range, fallen asleep practicing brain shots to find it didn't happen in real life. You also won't be the last. It makes us appreciate what the great ivory hunters and elephant cullers could do even more.

As Joyce says, “Man plans and God laughs”.

How true! Wives have a way of putting things into perspective.

The elephant was still breathing with a very disturbing wet cacophony of sounds. I wanted this to end.

Very well described. A similar situation is probably my worst hunting experience. You can't pull the trigger fast enough to make that sound go away!:(

Really enjoyed hearing about your hunt Jim. Great report. You certainly have the proper attitude, and show the proper respect when going after elephant. Congratulations on a great bull. Your photos are superb. Thanks for sharing your story.(y)

Thanks for all the kind words. I'd like to repeat that the photos were all taken by Justin Drainer, the videographer we hired to film the hunt. We had never done that before and Justin was a great addition to the team. I doubt Joyce or I took more than twenty pictures the whole hunt. It made the hunt all the more enjoyable.

Cheers
Jim
