So this might sound odd, but I PREFER rather unique trophy mounts: I like my animals to have a lot of character. Stand two Gemsbok side by side, one with symmetrical 55" horns, the other with one 50" and one 23" horn, I'm gonna drop the weirdo every single time.
That said, is it unusual for outfitters to offer "discount" prices on specimens with broken or odd horns, etc? Just thinking that with the right prices on a few specimens, I could select a few more than I've been planning.
Thoughts?

I like typical horns but I am also a sucker for th oddballs-unique, full of character. The place I have hunted does have a “cull” price for those characters. But every place will have its own ideas about this so make sure you have this discussion with your ph before you go out hunting.
I’ve seen several outfits here offer packages specifically for broken horns or known “freaks” -so you are looking for specific animal at a predetermined price. It would be cool to do a package Like that sometime

Most outfitters will offer cull hunt additions for some species, just ask as they would rather you shoot them and pay something than they shoot them and make nothing.

As said above, but even 45in would be shot !

38in is a very big Bull Gemsbok !

Some areas may discount an odd ball or deformed animal as Management or Cull animal, but look at the folks who want a Scrum Cap or broken horn Buffalo, there is demand !

I let a Client shoot a monster broken horned Red Harterbeest at a reduced price & my Boss almost sacked me saying his cock wasn’t broken & he wanted the blood line, I said he isn’t going to win many fights with one horn !

:S Welcome: to AH
Show us some pics of your trophy's

55” Gemsbok is going to be a world record, but yeah, who would shoot one when there is a tender brownie around that you might get one night of brai off of!

No problem.
Just ask oufitter what you want. I have a friend full of such trophies.
Many times, it will be on culling offers.

but u were wrong 2X, the ones with one horn win most fights and actually kill other bulls because they have 1 horn

Yes I know true story but that is common mainly with Impala & we shot them on sight.
I would say Gemsbok be the same but I don’t think Harterbeest would be such killers ?
Not sure how they fight, can’t say I’ve seen them doing so, seen near every thing esle fighting. !

yip the also fight but dont kill each other as often
one horn, oryx, waterbuck, sable are very dangerous

I chose age and character over inches when it came to my buffalo.

I had no idea. That is really quite interesting.
yip instead of hitting and possibly locking horns, the one with one horn, his horn slips past and stabs the other one
also less force needed to poke one hole, compared to 2 holes
a poke in the gut or side means a long slow painful death

Makes complete sense. Thank you.

On my cull hunt I saw a Kudu with a broken horn. It gave us the slip but I would like to have pursued it because it would have been the odd one out . Just something that we would have to pursue.
The business owner said he would hold it if I was planning a return trip but I wasn’t committing to that at the time.
I would have been happy to to take it as one of my culls if I could.
I don’t know if I would seek out malformed or freak animals but I would hunt them or cull it where it’s the right thing.
If a damaged trophy was the result of a special hunt then maybe it would deserve being preserved because of the experience and the hunt.

I do understand the desire for age and character, but I prefer it a little differently.

I like symmetrical horns/antlers, but scarred faces, cut ears, etc. The old Bull that's losing his hair and battle scarred is my kinda trophy. ;)

Like this one? Teeth worn to nubs but still symmetrical.

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
