Unbelievable, thank you for posting this!

Sure would be grand having them in the collection...thanks for sharing.

With all the pre 64 Winchester fanatics on this site I am thinking number 3 and 4 will come out soon from someone’s safe for all of us to see :)))

What calibers are they?

The Number “1” Rifle

It was back in 1937 when a man walked into a hardware store in Durango, Colorado and bought himself a Winchester Model 70 rifle in 30-06, although back then the barrel was marked “30GOV’T06”.

Who would have ever known what kind of iconic rifle the M70 would become. There is just something about walnut and old steel that feels right. Craftsmanship in a production item that is not seen today.

I remember reading that article on serial number 1. Amazing it ever left Winchester.
I love stories like that, I’ve heard some great stories of how people have come by old colts and Winchester rifles. I had the privilege to research several old 1st Gen Colt SAA revolvers. One got me very excited because it fell into the Custer Colt Serial Number Range! Upon studying it I gave my critique of it and got ridiculed over my opinion. I recommend sending the gun to John Kopec out in California and called John to arrange inspection. He confirmed all that I had said of the revolver plus added that the gun was in the Custer range but was one of several revolvers that got stolen on their way to the 7th Cavalry. This gun had ended up in the hands of a New Mexico Cowboy that rode for the livestock commission. When cows were rustled in NM, they would ride down to old Mexico and gather them plus the extras that were among them and bring them back to NM. The old man that owned the gun had a picture of his grandfather sitting his mount with the old colt and a 30 Winchester in the scabbard down on the border. Learning the story was almost as good as owning that revolver to me!
Sorry to hijack the thread with a Colt story. Just thought it kinda pertains to the history of No. uno Model 70

Absolutely fantastic !
I still consider the Winchester model 70 rifle to be the United States of America's greatest contribution to the sporting world .
On a related subject , l was reading on a thread here that the model 550 from the firm , CZwill be discontinued soon sadly.
If this is true , then l estimate that the model 70 rifle from Winchester will be the most selling off- the- shelf hunting rifle for large game in the world.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I have a trip to Istanbul planned in February . Do you own a rifle calibrated for the .460 Weatherby magnum cartridge ? I am most touched by your kind gesture . What firm made your rifle ?
