Custom Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .416 Taylor, built on a 1960 Action.
This was someone’s custom build, a buddy in acquired it and I picked up off him when he needed some money fast. I don’t know the back story on it or anything about the builder other than someone spent some serious money on it. The custom wood stock looks amazing and the bedding job is one of the better ones I’ve seen. Checkering is very clean with almost no imperfections or flaws. There are a couple small dings and scuffs on the buttstock, likely from bumps while handling and/or moving it into and out of the safe. It’s very possible these could be steamed out. Conservatively I’d give the wood an easy 94-95% condition. LOP is 13.25” including the Old English buttpad.
The metal/bluing also looks great, with a couple very minor scuffs, likely from someone moving her around in the safe and handling. Barrel band, barrel and receiver all flow nicely and were done together. Again, conservatively I’d give it a 94-95% condition. Bolt face shows very little wear.
Rifle is of proper weight for a 416 Taylor. It’s actually in my opinion a little on the heavier side than needed, and should be very pleasant to shoot. I’ve personally never shot this rifle to comment. Unfortunately I just realized my scale is broken, so I can’t give you an accurate weight until I’m back home next week and have had a chance to replace it, if someone cares or wants that info.
Included in the sale will be enough 416 Taylor Headstamped Brass (110 pieces of new unfired & 5 pieces of once fired Norma) plus 35 Rounds of Commercially Loaded .416 Taylor Ammo (20 A-Frames & 15 TSX’s). The buyer will at least be good for to zero and reload for while not having to worry about proper headstamps when traveling into and out of Africa or other foreign countries.
Additional .416 Taylor brass can easily be made using .458WM casings. Properly headstamped .416 Taylor Brass often cost 2-2.5x more than virgin .458WM brass.
- 3 unopened bags of New Unfired Quality Cartridge Brass - 20pc per bag
- 2 unopened bags of New Unfired Norma Brass - 25pc per bag
- 1 Box (20 rounds) of custom loaded Superior Ammo w/ 350gr Swift A-Frames - This is a Test Load Box so each load (4 rounds each) is color coded. They’ll each use a different powder or charge and based on your target/grouping Lonnie can then fine tune the load to dial in accuracy or terminal performance. Lonnie tracks his loads with the date code on the label and colors. Ammo is headstamped .416 Taylor using Jamison Brass
- 1 Box (20 rounds) of Hendershots Custom .416 Taylor ammo loaded w/ 350gr TSX’s that should produce 2500fps out of a 24” Barrel. 5 rounds were shot by the previous owner, and 15 remain. Ammo is once again 416 Taylor Headstamped and loaded with Norma Brass this time.
This rifle has been looked over by multiple Model 70 Collectors, including one who’s forgotten more than I’ll ever know. His copy of “The Rifleman’s Rifle” by Roger Rule is more tattered, has more sticky notes, and dog ears than my biology textbook in college before finals the second time taking the class. He spent several hours trying to convince me to keep this rifle a few weeks ago, and ultimately conceded given my current hunting aspirations, vast collection of Pre64’s, and Doubles this rifle would likely sit in my safe, never get hunted, and he too thinned his herd at one point to keep hunting in Africa.
