Welcome To Rance Safaris

The Rance family has been hunting Southern Africa for generations. We own and manage the 14’262 acre Kei River Reserve in the Kei River valley and 6’860 acre Cloudlands Game Reserve in the Fish River valley, both located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. These are wildlife havens, populated extensively with many species of game including buffalo and managed sustainably with good ecological and wildlife management principles.

Owing to the development of private reserves like ours, South Africa and the Eastern Cape in particular, now has more species and numbers of wild game animals than ever before.

Only a few hunts will be offered per year on our reserves thereby ensuring clients a special experience. Hunting terrain is big, wild and open – see the photographs of typical terrain, or visit Google Maps 32°18’3.74″S 27°34’55.35″E for Sweetlands lodge at Kei River Reserve and 33° 0’38.47″S 26°20’56.67″E for Cloudlands Game Reserve.

Hunting takes place throughout the year, but best months are from March to August when weather is cooler and for buffalo, best months are July to September – see hunting information for climate.

Hunting with Rance Safaris

There are no complications in planning a hunt with Rance Safaris. You tell us what species you need and we’ll advise if we can meet your requirements.

unnamed.jpg

Hunting is “walk-and-stalk” and can be strenuous for the fitter or more adventurous clients, or tailored to meet your level of fitness. Your level of fitness, hunting experience and species list is required for us to plan your hunt, so it’s important you advise us of this.

One of our greatest pleasures (and talent) is to introduce new hunters to the exciting sport of hunting. If we can’t make a hunt exciting for a client, we’d prefer not to do it. If your whole family want to hunt, you’ve come to the right place. All lodges have a shooting range nearby where rifles may be checked for zero and function.

The lodges are located within the hunting area, so you do not have to travel for hunting, excepting for those species indicated on the price list. The normal hunting method is to glass the area from high vantage point in search of game animals. Once spotted, the stalk begins. Shooting from or near a vehicle is not allowed so that animals do not associate vehicles with hunting.

Shooting distances vary from close (50m) to long shots out to 400m for those who are proficient at those ranges. Vegetation varies from very bushy to open and terrain from deep valleys, to flats to mountains. A study of the photographs will give an idea of what to expect.

Firearm requirements vary according to the game species being hunted. Generally all medium calibres like 7x 57, .308. 7×64, 30-06 with 165gr bullets will suffice, but long range calibres like 7mm Rem with 175gr bullets and 300 Win or H&H with 180/200gr do best for those hunters who are skilled at longer range shooting. The .338 mag is probably over-kill for most species, but not for larger animals like eland, waterbuck, blue wildebeest, zebra and southern kudu.

For buffalo, the minimum calibre required is 9.3mm or .375 with as heavy a bullet weight as possible. Shooting ranges for buffalo are normally close, so heavier calibres work well. For clients who do not use heavy rifles regularly, we recommend the .375 H&H.

It is essential to use good quality bullets as African animals are tough, with heavy bone structures. Generally something like Nosler Partitions or Winchester Powerpoint work well enough, but even better are the more expensive makes such as Swift A-frame, Barnes X, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw.

You advise us what calibres you own or prefer to use, and we’ll advise you what to bring, or what is have available from our collection.

Don’t under-estimate the excitement which takes place when you line up on one of our African icon species like kudu, nyala or buffalo. We’ve not met a person yet who isn’t soaked with adrenalin when facing any these magnificent animals. We understand, appreciate and just love the excitement which goes with guiding a client.

Wounded animals are seldom lost as our trackers and guides are experienced in following up and we have dogs trained in blood spoor to bay the wounded animals.

Because of thick bush and ample cover, “walk and stalk” bow hunting is more successful than hides. Hides can be made, but with widespread water and nutritious vegetation, sitting in hides over water or licks is less successful. The method of bow hunting is also dependent on the species being targeted. Our professional Hunters will be able to advise on what equipment to bring.

Wing-shooting is available if your trophy list is completed early. Dove, guinea-fowl, francolin and geese shooting can be arranged and an array of shotguns is available for your use. The lodges have clay-pigeon throwers for recreational shooting. We love firearms and shooting, so any time the urge takes you, we’re ready to participate.

It’s advisable to allow 7 days for a successful safari and a buffalo hunt requires a minimum of 10 days. For a buffalo hunt a minimum of four other species must be booked.

Hunting Policy:

Being hunters ourselves, we know how the trophy bug grabs one. However it is not our policy to shoot exceptional trophy animals when they are still of prime breeding age. Maintaining the quality of our trophy animals is more important to us than the lure of money to hunt them before their prime.

Ever since we commenced game management on our reserves , we have avoided plundering the prime trophy gene pool. As a result we can confidently state we have some of the finest trophies around, especially southern greater kudu and nyala.

You will likely see a 45 inch buffalo and some huge kudu. If you luck into an extraordinary specimen which is older and past breeding prime, you will be permitted to harvest it. If not, be ready with your camera. That’s part of the game management on our reserves which makes hunting and the quality of our game so special.

Fishing with Rance Safaris

The Eastern Cape region is arguably the mecca of fishing and hunting in South Africa. We have some of the finest trout and yellowfish flyfishing, bass-fishing and sea fishing in the country within a day’s drive of the hunting areas, some of yet undiscovered or only partially exploited.

Deep-sea, estuary and rock-and-surf sea fishing takes place along the famous South African Wild Coast located on the eastern seaboard. Our company operates three vessels out of a hamlet called Kei Mouth, launching through the surf in the Kei River mouth – visit the launch-site on GoogeEarth at 32ᵒ : 40.856’S; 028ᵒ : 23.302’E. Adjacent to the fishing area is the Kei/Nyara Marine Protected Area which enhances local fishing considerably.

There are no harbours along the Wild Coast, so launching is through the surf out of estuaries or off beaches. Vessels capable of this are limited in size and known locally in South Africa as “skiboats”. The vessels you will fish from are a 22’6” catamaran powered by twin 140hp Suzuki 4-stroke outboards or a 30′ catamaran with 200hp Suzuki outboards. They are equipped with all the gear and gadgets you’d expect to find on a vessel operated by fishing mad people.

The deep-sea fishing area is an easy two hour drive from the Kei River reserve so if the weather is right and your hunting trophy list up-to-speed, it’s a simple matter to take off for a day or two’s deep-sea fishing. You will stay in our family seaside cottage at a hamlet called Morgan Bay which can be seen on GoogleEarth 32ᵒ : 42.463’S; 028ᵒ : 20.547’S, or in a local Bed and Breakfast hotel, or return to the hunting lodge before and after fishing.

Species available vary according to the season. Winter months provide mostly bottom-fishing for reef species endemic to the eastern seaboard of South Africa. Summer months see the advent of game fish like dorado, yellowfin tuna and marlin. We have only just discovered the marlin resource off our coastline and are not experts at this. But we experienced 3 strikes in one day and total of 6 strikes over 7 days last summer from a mixture of blue, black and striped marlin. Marlin and dorado months are late November to end of January/early February.

Your daily hunting rate takes care of deep-sea fishing costs, excepting fuel which will be an added cost of $200 per day for the boat (not per person). If hotel accommodation is required, allow $100 per night. Refer the photo’s for some of the unique species available in this part of the world.

For freshwater fly and bass fishing and other forms of saltwater fishing, a few extra days should be allowed. If you’re interested in this, we will tailor-make a tour for you. There may be added costs if requirements are extraordinary.

Accommodation with Rance Safaris

Rance Safaris lodges are old Settler farm-houses which have been restored and modernized into hunting lodges. They are comfortable, fully serviced and unpretentious.

Food is South African and wholesome – full breakfasts with choices like eggs, bacon, cereals and dinners of roasted or barbecued meat, vegetables, salads. Fruit and snacks are always available. We believe in giving our clients a taste of the typical South African hunting culture, but if clients have special needs, these should be advised in advance and we will try to accommodate them.

South African beers, wines, liquor and soft-drinks are part of the service. Some of the specialty liquor from other countries is not traditionally available in South Africa, so you are advised to bring your own, or check with us to see if this can be obtained locally.

A typical hunting day starts at daybreak, quickly taken coffee or tea, rusks or toast and heading out to the hunting area with snacks and cold-drinks. Breakfast/lunch (brunch we call it) is taken around 11:00 am to mid-day and if the day is hot, a short siesta thereafter. Hunting ends at sundown and drinks and supper are served around the open fireplace in the lapa or in the lodge, which is an experience in itself under the African sky with stars brighter and wilder than anyplace else on earth.

Hunting Cape Buffalo in South Africa

Ray and PH Craig Middleton go after Cape Buffalo in some serious terrain and atrocious windy conditions - Ray was hunting with his 450/400 Charles Lancaster double so he needed to get up close and personal!

Mule deer and Colorado elk seasons almost done! Hunters driving farm roads, looking for racks, their PH driving them along, I ask that you not pull into my drive. The buck behind me, on the boundary line of the GMU somehow knows. The hunter laughs, I would invite you in to see my Searcy rifles but social distancing prevails, darkness arrives and the buck slides away into secret tree grove...
