Where is the best steak (and why)

Bob's in Dallas is hit and miss. I think there are at least two. One being the original. The one in Nashville right accross the convention center has been hit and miss as well.

Agreed, myself and another forum member ate at Bob’s during the last DSC convention in Dallas; the lamb I ordered was decent but the Tomahawk Ribeye @Backyardsniper ordered medium rare, came out looking like it was cooked with a flame thrower!

Has anyone been to Peter Luger’s in NYC?

Lawry's in Beverly Hills has the California Cut plate at $65. It's a beautiful prime rib and the bread, salad, mashed potatoes, and yorkshire pudding are all included. Most steakhouses are ala carte with the sides which makes them get expensive fast.

When I worked in Vegas, I would go to the one on Flamingo. Always thought it was a value.

Best beef steak I've ever had was Western Skies in San Angelo Texas. Best steak I've ever had was hippo inner filets on Lake Kariba. Biggest surprise ever. If you've never tried it, don't pass up the opportunity.

Tenders at the Luxor Hotel in Vegas. Also has great seafood.

My favorite restaurant experience period, and my favorite steak "out" is El Gaucho Tacoma, WA, either the bone-in ribeye or the NY strip. You walk in off the street and it's like stepping into another world. They have other locations in the PNW, but Tacoma is the best by far. Love that place!

That's very similar to what the best chef's say: (avg. steak) 3 min 1st side, 2 min 2nd side, flip ev minute to baste for 4 more...let it rest w/ no heat and it'll finish itself. It Works!

I cook over Mally Root charcoal - intense heat and a smokey flavour.
1 inch thick steak, 5min the first side, 4 min the second side then rest. = nice and bloody in the middle.

Taste of Texas is my favorite in Houston. I eat here every couple of months even if it’s just for the Qual App and Salad Bar for lunch.

Peter Luger, NYC, was the longtime king but many upstarts, like Wolfgang's (former head waiter at Luger's) has introduced competition.
Don Julio, Buenos Aries.
Gibsons, Chicago.
I think every major city, and some minor ones, now all have at least one good steakhouse.

Big Ed's in a tiny town north of Goodland, KS makes an incredible steak at a great price.

Someone mentioned The Keg earlier- that used to be a regular stop for the Wife and I when they were in Plano, TX. They moved to Arlington and it's just too far to go on the regular. Another very good menu for reasonable prices compared to "high end" steakhouses. In the DFW metero, we treat ourself to the occasional trip to Bob's, Ruth's Chris, Cattlemans, Del Frisco's.

Some others in my travels that have stood out: Double Nickel in Lubbock, Big Texan in Amarillo, Gibson's in Chicago. Plus a few others I'd have to try to look up and find again in San Diego, Buenos Aires, Kansas City (usually BBQ there), and I'm sure I am missing more.

And, a hunting season staple as nearby to the where I hunt TX deer/hogs: Copeland's Cafe in Seymour TX on Friday and Saturday nights. Might just be great because I'm hungry.

Interesting to see the Double Nickel on this list. I never had a bad steak there but nothing that really stands out to me. Next time you are in Lubbock go to Las Brisas.

Thanks for your reply my friend. You have made my evening. The owners focus on one restraunt, and they go all out. From the moment you walk in til the moment you leave it's a royal experience. If you choose to pick you steak from the market, you get the whole history on that steak. What a place.....

Bohanan's in San Antonio is one of my favorites. I do have to agree with Rimbaud too, I do like Gibson's in Chicago!

I honestly don't enjoy restaurant steaks, and it must be partly down to the ambiance and partly down to the fact that once the tasty outer edge is gone the rest is just a bit cold and mushy.
My friend puts brisket on a braai and you eat it with sadza (corn meal) on the side. You keep returning your piece to the braai as you go to warm it and refresh the outer crisp. Delicious!

The Pioneer in Sin Valley does a fantastic prime rib with a blue cheese butter.

Other have mentioned Peter Lugar n NYC which is great but their bacon is really special.
