What to Do….M70 SS Action

No doubt, UGLY.

But, I would test it a bit for accuracy.

The BOSS system was designed to allow a shooter to "tune" the barrel for accuracy with any loading.

You might triple your money by buying a box or two of the least expensive .300 WM ammo you can find at WalMart (something very common) and "dialing" the BOSS system into Sub-MOA accuracy.

A proven VERY ACCURATE rifle can sold for a premium.

I’m reading up on the 416 Taylor. Having never hunted for anything bigger than a moose, I’m not sure how much use I would have for it other than future trips to Africa.
I picked one up recently, and I plan to use it to drop a few whitetails and hogs before I take it overseas. Overkill? Sure. Then again, a deer can never be too dead.

Plus, if you are planning to go to Africa, why not have a DG gun ready to go?

A 350 gr speer at around 2600 does wonders on bear, elk, moose. a bit overkill on coyotes but then again I shot a couple jackals with a 500 jeff:S Oops:

I'd personally build a .458WM

I’ve got a Winchester 1886 lightweight in 45-70. It definitely gives me the warm and fuzzy! Doesn’t get that kind of velocity though.

Send the metal to Shaw Barrels (formerly E. R. Shaw) in PA and tell 'em to do what they did to mine (.416 Chatfield-Taylor,) then when it comes back HS Precision stock (w/ 3 action screws, Hg reducers, some channel relief will be required as the bbl diameter is larger than typ.,) Timney trigger (all enclosed, cassette-style not the factory crap that requires filing both the trigger and sear Equally), NECG iron sights, Talley Q/D mounts and a Trijicon 1-6x (green German #4). I have a build sheet from Shaw if you're really going to do this. It's what Shaw does. Others in PA make fully custom, even more accurate rifles (Bansner, Borden, et. al.) although Bansner does make really nice ultralightweight stocks of all types, but that's not what you need on a heavier-recoiling gun. A deer hunting friend has that BOSS system on a 3006-we're still laughing at it after decades (only a corporate committee could decide to mfr and sell something so ugly.) Why do guns w/o the BOSS system shoot so well? They're designed properly (metals selection, blueprinting, proper bbl sizing, etc.). 'Was def. an afterthought (or another trick way to save on metal) due to the reasoning of the Mother of Invention!

Get out of my head, please.

I just went with a 1-4 Trijicon on my .416 Taylor. I will also be using Talley rings. It seems that none of us are as original as we would like to think…

To be fair, this scope and a Trijicon 3-9x are going to be set up for my 375. But, the blueprint is there…

If possible, could you take a picture through the scope of that Trijicon. Really curious as to how that German #4 actually looks

Honestly, I kind of wish the center crosshair was a little more bold. It looks thinner in the pictures, but it’s still pretty thin to the naked eye.

Better than how it was depicted on the box. Looked extremely more open than in reality. With the dot lit, I think it’s fine.

I picked up an M70 Classic Stainless in 300 Win Mag from a local pawn shop for $475. I went over every bit of it to find out why it was so cheap, but it appears to be in good condition. It has one of those BOSS thingers on it. My first instinct was to remove it and put a thread cap on it, but the threaded portion is quite a bit longer than normal. If I cut the threaded portion off, the barrel will be about 22 3/4” long. Seems kinda short for a 300.

Thinking of rebarreling it. I already have a different 300 Win Mag, so maybe considering 338 Win Mag (I do have a 375 Ruger) or maybe a 257 Weatherby. If I leave it as a 300, I would probably load it with something heavy and use it for heavier cover/shorter shots. My other 300 has a 26” barrel and shoots 168gr TTSX really well at nearly 3300 fps. So, it’s the same cartridge but two really different setups.

As it sits, my 3.34” magnums are a 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, and 375 Ruger.
Call or email the Browning service center. They have a non-brake replacement for the BOSS and they will send it to you for free, at least they sent mine for free. Just specify the finish of your gun so it matches.

At some point they probably got enough complaints from deaf hunters who were also temporarily blinded by muzzle flash after they took a shot at dusk and didn’t know if they hit their target until 10 minutes later. Or they realized there might be some possible legal liability from the extreme decibels those things generate. I don’t have any paperwork to back that up.

Browning and Winchester are both owned by FN Herstal. I the Winchester BOSS should have the same specs as the Browning BOSS. Browning can verify the validity of that assumption. Pretty sure Browning handles Winchester’s service center operations anyway because Browning handles their US distribution.

The BOSS does what it was designed to do and does it very well. Lower recoil and better accuracy for sure. But just remembering when I used to hunt with a 7mag with a BOSS on it makes my teeth hurt.

Sorry, I missed that you had both versions of the BOSS.

There a company in Northern Michigan that makes many diffrent threaded protectors Hughes Precision ....I've have been buying for them for many years...if they don't have it they will make it......

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
