What is the best all around recoil pad and why?

Did you buy the jig as well to get the angle right or just eyeball it?

I hate to spend money on a jig that I’ll use once.
I’ve never used a jig, I put two layers of different coloured masking tape around the wood and belt sand down carefully till I just touch the top tape, if you see the second one you have gone too far, then finish sanding with fine grit and then wet rub paper, peel the tape off and it should be done

The jig just makes it easier to get the angle correct around the toe/bottom of recoil pad. I have an oscillating spindle/belt sander that works great for grinding pads. Also very useful for various purposes in our taxidermy business.

I have put a Limb saver grind to fit on my larger caliber rifles with good results.
Plus one on the limb saver. Though I am having the .404 Jeffery I am building right now fit with a red recoil pad from New England Custom Guns

Pachmayer slipons don't wander. At all. Turbon slipons don't wander. Limbsaver wandered after every shot at trap. Also, they're so soft the recoil causes trigger guard to gouge the front of my index finger during every shot ... shooting twelve gauge trap loads ... with my Browning auto.
I use the grind to fit Limb-Savers - The slip on Limb-Savers do in fact suck ass

A heap of them failed like that, gun oils were blamed, but I think it was a faulty product

I don't see how gun oil could get on a recoil pad, since it's the point furtherthest from. Agree on material defect over time.

That the Decelerator is what I use on my .416 Rigby and if shooting more than just a few rounds also use a PAST recoil pad which is some added protection.

I've been a big fan of Pachmeyr Decelerator for a long time, maybe long enough to be overlooking something better? I especially like the model with the section of smooth plastic at the very top of the pad that ensures against rubber snagging on clothing.
I am also really impressed with the recoil suppression ability of the leather slip over pads with the velcro closure, as sold by Kevins or I think Galco. The insert inside is actually a covered gel type, soft recoiling substance. Works great on shotguns or rifles.
Please feel free to comment on Silvers (or others) of which I am familiar, but have no actual experience. Are they soft recoiling?

On my rifles with a bit of recoil I really like the grind to fit LIMSAVER magnum recoil pads.
These are thick wide and seem to turn brutes into pussycats. They spread the recoil over a wider area and a longer time.
Works for me.

I threw away my Limbsaver slipon recoil pads. They are too soft, even in the sidewalls. Wander out of place at the range. After EVERY station at trap I had to readjust the damn thing. I even bought a size to small. Still wouldn't stay put. It's the only make our local gun shop would carry.
@Ontario Hunter
I have one on my Mossberg maverick 12gauge magnum and it stays in place even after multiple shots with 3" slugs.

NECG - Red Pad, multiple thicknesses and it holds up really good, they aren't bouncy at all, more like a Silvers but not as slick

I have the Pachmeyer decelerator pad and Kickeez pad. The kickeez for me provides better recoil reduction. Both are good.

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
