What did you reload today?

I am reloading 10,3x68 RWS and 9.3x64 for my move. With the RCBS bullet puller.

Question for those loading 38 Spl in 357mag guns. I'm wondering what loads in 38 Spl brass would generate the same pressure as a 357. The reason is I have a 357 revolver and a LOT of 38 Spl brass. All the loads I see for 38 Spl brass is built for 38 Spl revolvers and is well short of what a 357 Mag revolver will handle. the 38 Spl loaded to 357 pressures would be short of 357 Mag loads but more than what I see for 38 Spl+P.
The classic 38-44 loads are Keith’s load with his Lyman 358429 over 13 grains of 2400.
And Skeltons load of a Lyman 358156 crimped in the lower crimp groove over 13.5 grains of 2400.
I think either of these loads could stand to be reduced by .5 or 1 grain.
Current 357 mag load data from Lyman for the 358429 shows it being crimped over the front band.( to accommodate the short cylinders on the N frame smith and wessons) which would give about the same capacity as a 38 case when crimped in the crimping groove.

I got my new die set and bullets yesterday, so I figured I might as well load some up today. I loaded up some 338 ARC sub-sonic rounds for my new rifle that I am patiently waiting for Ruger to make available. I used Hornady 307 gr. Sub

X and matched them with Lil' Gun and CFE Black. The bullet on the right is a 330 BLK for scale.

There are two issues when loading .38 brass to .357 magnum pressures. Internal capacity and the brass thickness / toughness.

I can't measure brass toughness so I go with that same over all length AND reduce maximum load powder charges just a little bit from full bore .357 mag data. Over All Length = internal volume and = pressure if all else is equal with the brass.

If you load .38 brass with .357 magnum loads at the same over all length as .38's and expect the same pressure, be prepared for disappointment! And perhaps a catastrophic gun failure. Same as if you loaded .357 magnum ammunition way short from the data that was supplied for that brass. Volume = pressure. Less case volume = more pressure.

Another variable is chamber throat length and freebore. I'm not even going to address that. Long throats reduce pressure, short throats increase pressure. It has to do with the pressure generated before the bullet engages the rifling. Enough said.

Good info from Wyatt above. I'll add that I have loaded My 12.5 gr. of 2400 and 158 gr. plated bullet based on the above principles.

Loaded up a bunch of 405gr. hard cast Buffalo Barn bullets for the Model 86/71 Pedersoli at about 1,750fps. Just deer loads for testing for next fall. Still haven't decided what to use on them, 6.5 cal., .308cal. or .458cal. Of course, there are the 9.3's and .375's.

@cwickgo9 what speed are looking for out of the 41 Special? I’ve never messed with the short cases but just download the mags.
I am loading some 41 magnums as we speak.
A 225 Keith (H&G 258 clone) over 9.5 grains of Longshot. This load gives me 1100 FPS on average. It’s my favorite 41 load.
I also load 7.3 grains of W231 for 910 FPS.
I just thought I'd try to shoot something a little softer in my favorite pistol. There are a couple indoor ranges I go to that dont allow "magnum" loads. I've picked up some 170 gr TC. I dont know why I didnt consider just "downloading" the magnum cases.

Downloading the magnum cases is less efficient than using the 1/10" shorter cases, but may be more accurate due to less bullet jump into the forecing cone of the barrel, as well as not being slanted when leaving the case.

Loaded up some 300gr Woodleigh Hydros in my 375 Ruger today with H4350 powder.

First test of my new 300wm barrel on the r8

Tested 4831sc under 180 accubonds and 180 ttsx. It didn't like the ttsx but 2 charge intervals were very positive for the accubonds.

Next I'll re-shoot to verify and start adjusting COAL to see if they tighten up. But at 0.85", I'm already there for general hunting purposes.

Rainy and cold in S Carolina today. Likely going to work on some .308 in 150 gr. ttsx.

Loaded up some 350gr Mag Tips for the 416 Rigby and 250gr Monoflex projectiles for a 458 Win Mag tonight.

Working up a plains game load for the 416 Rigby for Mozambique this coming August.

350 grain Barnes TTSX's at what I suspect will chronograph at 2600 fps.

+2" at 100 yards should cover me well out to 200/225 yards if need be.

Loaded some 350gr Speer Hot Cor’s for my 458 win mag today. Plan to use these for black bear this spring. Hope to get near 2400fps, using Hodgdon load data and IMR 4198 gives me a max load of 72gr for around 2560fps.

I was going to load some 416Rem light practice loads to break in a new rifle, but I'm concerned this lot of brass I have is rotten. Looks like some moisture may have gotten to it inside and out. I sized a couple dozen cases and decided to stop. Is it worth the risk or should I scrap the whole lot?

If you by chance have a wet tumbler with stainless pins, I'd run it in there for 30 mins and see how it cleans up. Otherwise... if you've ever seen an internal stretch/separation check tool made out of a paper clip, see if the internals will catch when you drag the tip across.

Picture a paperclip unwound, the very last 3-4mm of one end bent at 90 deg. Stick it inside and drag up to the mouth of the cartridge. Like feeling for cracks with your fingernail.
If you feel depth of the corrosion, I'd toss the brass.

Don't have a wet tumbler, but I have heard of the paperclip test. I can SEE depth on the outside of some of the cases if I zoom in on pictures I've taken. I'll probably keep some and toss some.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
Impala cull hunt for camp meat!
