What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

For me it isn’t nostalgia. My first rifle I bought was a 300 WBY. I’ve never noticed a difference when shooting shorter actions. So the whole shorter action thing has always been confusing to me.

The nostalgia part was referring to the H&H.

I wish the 358 Norma was readily available. It is mostly dead.

Both the 450 NE and 350 Rigby are more dead than the 358 Norma, but you can get ammo. No factory rifles made for any of the 3.

What makes it dead?

When I read "dead," I figure no firearms--except, maybe, custom--manufactured for it.

I, too, was thinking of the 35 Winchester. With some old M95s still chambered for it, pressures would need to remain as they were, so it offers little more than the .358 Winchester, which I would love to see in a handy bolt or lever carbine with express sights as a timber gun.

Sad. Overall for North America--and maybe if I ever got to Africa for medium game--I consider it an excellent cartridge--just as good now as for my first centerfire in '67. Seemed to always shoot fairly well with any reloads from 110-220 grains. Hemingway did great work with his G&H Springfield and 220 grain solids. Others I know who yet own a .30/06 still respect it, like to shoot it.

The 250s CFE223 and work up to a max of 65gn for 2,700fps.
These loads generate some recoil but it is very manageable. You can definitely tell the difference between them and factory loads

In a modern lever gun, not a costly M95 antique, probably, were it available. That or a .358 Winchester. Only with my own money.

I would love to see the .318 Westley Richards come back. Such a cool cartridge with classic African history. I think a bolt action 400/350NE would be cool as well. Was the 375H&H of Africa before the 375 was introduced and the non rimmed 350 Rigby.

The cartridge 7x66 S.E vom Hofe and especially the 9,3x64 Brenneke still have a following. Bringing them back from the dead is not necessary, rather preventing them from dying. The 7x66 is very much at risk, and with the 9,3x64, you never know. she was close to dying once, but has recovered somewhat. The problem also lies in the fact that everyone internationally is fixated on the marginal cartridge 9,3x62, although the cartridge 9,3x64 is superior and definitely more suitable for hunting dangerous game in Africa. Unfortunately, she has not the aura of the cartridge 9,3x62 and seems to be unknown to the majority.

In general, what was not reactivated did not demonstrate any clear advantages over other cartridges from the same period. This includes cartridges like the 318 WR or 350 Rigby. Ultimately, it's just a matter of personal passion to bring back from the dead an old cartridge.

Russia used it in a version of the dugarov( spelling) with armour piercing projectiles as a longer distance anti personal weapon
Not sure if they still do, but you can almost guarantee it is in the Ukraine along with a lot of obsolete equipment

the little Whelen aka 358 win loaded with 225gn North forks or Woodleighs RNSP to 2,500fps makes it punch well above it weight class and handles pg no problems. Just as that ol Cajun boy @ Rick HOlbert. He just happens to know a thing or three about the 358 as well. His go to powder is win748.
