What about the 300 H&H ???

I have a Remington 721 and a Remington 700 custom shop , both in 300 H & H. Still working on loads with the 700. The 721 likes 180 grain Accubonds. What powder do you like for the 200 & 220 grain bullets?

Have used RL22 on 220gr Hornady RNSN and 240gr Woodleigh PP. Worked great every time.

Thinking on taking mine to Mozambique next year, hunting Leopard and planes game with it. I’m thinking of 200gr A Frames for planes game, what would you recommend for Leopard?

Thank You

My pre 64 model 70 loves the 175 LRX at 2925fps.

Thinking of deer hunting with it this season so I checked zero at 200 the other day. Unbelievably accurate rifle.

Would love to have one. Have an unfinished project on a sporterised P14 action with a 30cal target barrel I picked up. Sadly reamers are basically non existent in NZ and with the dollar the way it is and freight, their isn't enough shekels in the toy fund to import one from the states. No rentals either

Same setup as Atticus. I dropped an axis in Texas a few weeks ago at 280yds and it never moved. I have leupold vx-6 with Talley rings. I live in coastal ga and don’t typically take long shots but that rifle can clang 10in steel at 450 yds all day. The cds system is basically cheating once it’s dialed in.

If you had used the same opening paragraph to make a statement instead of ask a question, 90% of AH would have heartily agreed with you. Perfect choices, especially in combination with each other! The 300 H&H feeds as smoothly if not better than the 375 H&H, they have the same bolt throw, both proven for over 100 years. You couldn't find a better training rifle for later 375 use. The 300 is under-utilized, underloaded with the potential for even higher performance, and yes, "screams safari." If any caliber deserved to be reawakened, it is the 300 H&H, IMO.
You don't need us to convince you. You were on the right track from the first sentence.

I'm new to the site and have been looking at all the recommendations for African Rifles. I figure my first trip will be a PG safari so I been looking into a rifle to dedicate solely to hunting African PG. I have seen a lot of good recommendations but I never saw the 300 H&H mentioned. I was thinking of building a 300 H&H and have it push a good 180 gr bullet. This should take damn near anything right? I know a 30-06 will do most anything the old H&H will do, but the H&H head stamp just screams SAFARI. What do you guys think?

I have three rifles in mind for tackling Africa. A 300 H&H for PG and any antelope, 375 H&H for anything big or dangerous, and a 6x45 for the tiny ten and any varmints.
@cavtrooper94
Personally I think you have the ultimate classic combination for Africa. Others with far more experience may disagree and say you need something with a 4 in it as well.
You may have a hard time finding a 300 H&H but it is a classic cartridge.

Thanks VonJager,

I have a pre 64 Super Grade with a 26" barrel. I've been wondering if I should cut it down to 24". It shoots 200 gr TSX's well but was looking for opinions as to barrel length and bullet weights. I do like the North Forks in general, as Uncompahugre mentioned. I shoot them in my 404 Jeff but haven't in other calibers.
@LRich
If'n it ain't broke don't try and fix it.
Leave it at 26" that's the ideal length to get the most out of it

@csmiffy
Surely you could find a gunsmith in Australia you could rent one off. Try TSE /MAB barrels in Brisbane Qld.

Great rifle! I have a pre 64 model 70 supergrade. Going to the Eastern Cape in June. Sadly, I won’t be taking it as I have Eland on the menu so it will be my Dakota 375 and Brno 7x57. I shoot 200 grain Nosler Partitions out of mine.

i have two 300 H&H rifles, a mint remington 721 and a mint ruger #1. both with 26" barrels and they both like imr 4350 with 180 gr bullets.

@Freetrade
The super 30 with some nice bonded bullets like Woodleigh 240s or north fork or A frames would do the job nicely on eland

I honestly never thought I would find a better shooter than my 7mm Mauser until I got my hands on a 300H&H Magnum. Here’s a few pics of mine after I got it from Holts in UK . It seems to like 200gr bullets . The 26 inch barrels are best for the 300H&H . The H&H quick detachable scope mounts are terrific . It now has a Swarovski z6 scope mounted .

I went to a Holts auction house in Sandringham while I was in Norfolk. The amount of firearms is mind boggling and the owner is a great bloke to talk to.
He had a nice buffalo stopper that had your name all over it at a reasonable price.
A beautiful underlever 8 bore double.

Old thread but there is never a bad reason to talk about the 300H&H.

I will always suggest a .30-06 with 180gr bullets or a 300WinMag with 180/200gr bullets as the perfect single rifle for all non DG.
The Super 30 fits right in between this and is the sweet spot for game large and small , up close and far.

I also see people saying shots are close in Africa; this is not true and there are many areas and species that only offer longer shots.
I support this. I have used my 30.06 with supressor on several hunts in Africa, including two kudus. However, I changed to a 300 winmag with a supressor for the last two hunts and it made a good difference. It is like a 30.06 on steroids and increases the «one shot « hunt greatly.
