Luke, your going to get a lot of Flak for a Sabatti post. That being said a friend and I have one in 450-400 and after 200+ rds through it and 3 capes as well as plains game out to 100yds to their credit we have not had any issues. My only suggestion would be to ensure its not one of the first batches that where imported to the states (Assuming that's where you are from). I know some of them where not regulated well and the shop that "fixed" them did not do a traditional job.

Far as the .375 flanged I have no input but I'm sure the experienced guys here will know much more.

JMO: Use the $6k as a down payment on a GOOD double. Sabatti quality seems to be hit or miss and even the best are only fair.
I’ve never shot one but have handled several and was not impressed, especially when you compare to a VC, Hyem or Kreighoff.

375 Flanged is a great round, lots of history. In a Heym light frame that would be heaven, even a second hand one if you can find it.

Merkel is a good make, their sxs also has a Greener cross bolt like the Heym does, which makes for a very positive lockup. I dont know the Rizzini, but I would steer clear of over unders.

I believe the later production that did not go through cabelas were solid rifles. I’ve shot my buddy’s .500, which was later production, and could not fault it.

Yep…

I also shot a sabatti 500 NE, not a cabelas gun, in South Africa… I could find no fault with it at all.. it locked up tight, shot straight and was well regulated, and pointed nicely..

Granted it was no London’s best rifle.. but it also wasn’t toting a price tag north of $30k… and I would have felt 100% comfortable hunting DG with it…

In fact, the gun I’m speaking about did escort me on a DG hunt.. my PH was carrying it when I took the buff in my avatar…

I was very happy to have it manned just a few feet away as my back up..

I have a Sabatti double in 416 Rigby. I have put around 150-60 shots through it and have not had any problems what so ever. I will be taking it to SA after buff in APR god willing. I would go for it. IMO they are an underrated rifle that have had a bad wrap in the past. Mine came direct from the factory in italy as im in the UK. Thank god I got it pre brexit is all I have to say.

It would not pattern both barrels on a pie plate at the 50yrd range. Thankfully a miracle worker named Ken Owens was able to get my rifle working. If 6k is all you can ever hope to swing for a double, like me, then i highly suggest you contact Ken Owens.

Is the 375 Flanged still come with the double triggers? I had heard a few years ago they were only being built into the single trigger model.

I think the .375 flanged caliber is a waste of time. Everyone seems to say that the base line for double rifles is the 450/400 and has rave reviews from some smart people. Personally I'd look into a .458 bore for the availability of projectiles.

I think a .375 flanged would be very interesting. For me it would need to have longer barrels (25” min) and classic British styling. I would want it regulated for 300 gr A-Frames. Ballistically it’s is very similar to the 9.3x74 which is regarded as a very versatile light double cartridge.

In my humble opinion Ken Owens is as good of double gunsmith as you will find in the USA. He bought all of the Sabatti's that Cabellas had returned and or not sold. He went through each and every one. He says that they are good guns. I would say that they do not compare with a 88b or 89b Heym, but they are also not in the same price range.

I would suggest that you obtain the serial #s of the Sabatti and contact Ken, he is located in Moscow, Tennessee. This one may be one of the ones he went through. Either way I know of no one more qualified to talk to about Sabatti's

The double rifle market is in the toilet.
Save up a little more and set yourself a target and be vigilent on looking at all the sales sites and you will find a Merkle or Chapuis for under $10k.

If a Sabatti double will get the job done and any issues are easily resolved by a trip to a reputable gunsmith I don't see the problem. Not all of us have the means to spend five figures on a hunting rifle. That's not sour grapes or jealousy. It's economic reality. I'm honestly glad that a select few of you are able to keep that segment of gun world alive. I'd hate to see those guns disappear forever. The rest of us will have to be satisfied with other more affordable options.

I have been on the look out for a .375 flanged for a long time. It will do anything that a 9.3 does and do it with a 300 gr bullet. Assuming it was accurate and scoped, it would be a superb choice for a general bag Safari that included buffalo. The ideal rifle in that caliber for me would be a high quality Continental built OU with claw or Recknagel mounts. It would carry like an ‘06, have 200+ meter range, and would be perfect for a one-rifle hunt.
