What’s everyone using for Buffalo?

.416 Ruger with 400 gr TSX and 400 gr Barnes Banded Solids. For my next buff hunt, I’ll use a .458 Lott with 450 gr TSX

I have used a variety of cartridges over the decades. 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, 416 Rem, 458 WinMag, 450 Ackley, 500 Jeffery, and 470 Nitro Express. My favorite and most used has been the 416 Rigby using it alone for over fifty Mbogo. Have used the Rigby off and on for fifty years so have used a wide variety of ammo. Currently prefer 400 grain TSX in that caliber. By the way, all calibers have worked fine for me. If you are new to buffalo hunting and not accustomed to heavy recoil use a 375 H&H as it will work fine and you will be less apt to flinch a shot awry. Kindest Regards

Nitro express for buffalo: 450-400, 450 no2, 500, 600
Black powder cartridge: 4-bore, 8-bore

416 Rem Mag 400gr Swift A-Frame.
416 Rem Mag 370gr North Fork CPS.
450 Watts 450gr Barnes TSX.

All work about equally well for me.

Last month's was .500 NE with 570 grain Hornady DGX went 20 yards and dead.
Next year will most likely also be .500 NE.

I've shot buffalo with Nosler Partitions, not my favorite, Woodleighs, TBBC's, and my favorite, Swift A Frames. All with a .416 Rem. They all died. Just got back from Tanzania with four on ticket. Swift A frames did fine when I did my part. Botched one.

I notice that 9.3x74 and .45-70 have the same amount of votes!

Ever since my first African Safari in 1974, most of the Cape buffalo which I’ve shot … were taken with a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum . I took one in 1978 with a .458 Winchester Magnum, but then realized that it’s penetration was relatively anaemic compared to the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum .

Of all the .375 caliber rifles which I’ve rented from my White Hunters over the years… The best would have to be an early model BRNO ZKK602 with the Hog’s Back stock and the folding diopter on the top of the receiver. Initially my preferred set up for Cape buffalo, was one RWS TUG 300 Gr soft point ( for the initial shot ) and five Remington 300 Gr round nosed steel jacketed FMJ solids in the magazine ( for the follow up shots ) . Now, I prefer the Federal 300 Gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw controlled expansion soft point almost exclusively. And it’s served me very well.

Just for kicks, I’d really like to take my next Cape buffalo with a .505 Gibbs though. Such a regal caliber.

375 h and h with 300 grain Swift A frames backed with Woodleigh hydro for back up. one shot kill at inside 50 yds with the A frame in June of this year!

Have only killed one that was with a 416 RemMag. After that experience I'm looking for bigger on the next one.

What’s your go to gun for cape buff?
Just returned from South Africa 24AUG21. Used my 375 RUM with Remington factory loads 300 gr Swift A-frame. At 90 yards and he ran another 50 yards. This RUM is very accurate.

"Left-handed of course"

For nostalga, I like my trusty Winchester M1895 .405 WCF with a healthy dose of Viht N530 and a tough Hawk 350 grainer at 2270 fps. Otherwise I have my absolutely reliable FN M98 Express rifle in 9,3x66 Sako (converted from 9,3x62) with a 286 grain Barnes TSX at about 2530 fps.

My first 2 were with 470NE double and hard to say I'll use anything else.

First 2 where with my 470 NE double, Last one a month ago ended up using my PH’s 458 Lott because of last minute flight cancellation. Either worked well
