Hey guys. I just stumbled in on this rifle for 700 bucks. I didn't want to be back in the "Wish I bought" thread, so I got it despite the less than perfect stock. I'm open to wood or synthetic. Also, if you know of an aftermarket option that I should check out, please let me know. Thanks a million!

Anyone, anyone, Bueler??

Hey man. Someone decided that it needed QD sling swivels and took a drill to her. Looks like two buttholes in the stock....

Check out Boyd's stocks for aftermarket. You can get it made to order with a lot of choices of laminates and wood. There's a load of Browning models they mention, though they don't mention Safari Magnum. Is it an A-Bolt?

The cross bolt caps seem to indicate that the rifle might be a victim of the infamous Browning saltwood issue; I would definitely pull it from the stock and inspect it carefully for signs of rust, and maybe even do a silver nitrate test on the wood (you can Google it). If it indicates rust, I'd definitely replace the stock. You can find OEM type replacement stocks at places like Custom Shop Inc, but they're not cheap; and honestly, the factory stocks aren't the most ideally shaped for my tastes. I would probably get something like a Richard's MicroFit or a custom stock.

It's an FN Mauser.

Exactly. Years ‘67 - ‘69 and even through ‘71/‘72 were problematic with the salt issue. Some stocks had smaller “hotspots” so checking for salt requires much more than pulling the butt pad screws that you hear a lot about. Always best to pull the whole thing apart and check correctly.

Yep. This is a 70 model. I ordered some Silver Nitrate to test it. It turned white like peroxide if it's bad. It's amazing what stocks cost...
