Australia and now South Africa
Its here. My new Von Gruff 4x4 Hunter. A new design from Garry after showing me a couple of sketchs for design after considering what i was asking for.
I just rang him to let him know they arrived safely.
Mine has Redgum Timber handles supplied by me from a piece i cut. Garry stabilised my wood and finished it nicely. The concept was a maximum length of 8" and i wanted it to look balanced or in proportion. So its about half handle half blade. The blade is a good thickness at the spune and has a flat grind as requested. It can be used for skinning but could easily be used for all sorts of cutting chores. I added a Brass flat back bolster in the mix after seeing one Garry posted in a thread. It just makes it look a little more refined.

My wife's knife. A Vin Gruff 5-1/2" Chefs knife. She saw some stuff on his dite and while she has no shortage of commercial kitchen knives i thought it only fair she should have one Custom made too.
Garry sourced Maroon linen Micarta at my request and this is the end result. Its a nice finish and i would not hesitate to use Maroon on a hunting knife. It looks domewhst natursl and this linen micarta has a little character. I believe Canvas Micarta is a little more grippy.

chris,
i really like your 4x4.
if i ever lose my hunter/skinner that is what will replace it.
bruce.
Bruce, put a pic up please . Just trying to get some members knives here so we can all see what is out there.
Paging Dr Ray @Dr Ray
@Red Leg would you like to post a picture of your knife/design
There are 3 members i asked about their knifes/thoughts.
Who else has a Von Gruff to show off?
@375 Ruger Fan has some nice knives for the kitchen. Have you seen Garrys current, maybe final iteration of a table knife/steak knife. He does sets of sox that would compliment that kitchen set nicely. He might put one here to show it off. I think the handle shape looks quite good to handle. No pun intended. I think it is ergonomic and would be nice in the hand.

@Timbo it was good to chat on the phone last week. It sounds like you have some good hunts under your belt. You might need a Von Gruff on that belt.
It would make a great talking piece for your trophy room.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen has an Aussie made custom but maybe he will take a liking to one of Garrys designs sometime, maybe buy something for his young fella who is an acomplished hunter.

Sure or Garry might have the pic handy.
Maybe i can copy it from a private message or text pic to me.

Thanks Chris, it was great catching up with you too. As for hunts, it's always the next one that I'm looking forward to!!

Yes, I like Von Gruff's knives and am toying with some ideas of what I want for my next one. Early this year I was sent this one a PH had made for me from Africa.

Dont lose it. There is a lead time anyway Garry has work booked in.
I got the inpression you might collect knives so another wont hurt if you like the design. Or he can adjust something to suit.
And then there is handle choice and sheath styles.
FYI i measured the width of my hand at 90mm when selecting style/size.
I think im about a normal size hand so the little handle suits my hand as it was to be a compact knife.
As far as looks go i think the Buffalo Skinner shown on the Von Gruff knives site is an impressive looking knife.

chris, as they say in the classics.
"it takes 2 hands to handle a whopper"
i had a puma called the skinner, similar to garry's buffalo skinner in style.
it did not get used much because i could not get on with it, and it is a very specialized type.
blades shaped like yours and mine are incredibly versatile, and more than a compromise in what they do.
i don't intend to lose mine. am very happy with it.
a knife will not do the work for you, but good ones sure make it easier.
and if you only have one, versatility counts for a lot.
whatever you get you will to some degree have to get used to it.
the more i got used to my handle, the more functions the knife is capable of doing well, and the blade design allows that to happen.
we benefit from garry's experience in the field, as well as his building quality and ethic.
i was a knife collector in that i kept buying knives in the quest for the ideal.
now i am selling them off, just a white hunter and a right handed trapper by puma to go.
i wish i had the von gruff in my younger days when i used to skin a lot of donkeys and goats .
bruce.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
