Vintage Safari Pictures

Hello Kouprey,
thanks for the other great photos.
Judging by the sharply profiled nose, it could well be Andy Anderson.
I was skiing in Trentino for a few days and saw this morning that you are a new member.
Welcome to the best forum and I am very happy to have an "Africa historian" in the neighbourhood.
Maybe we can meet one day, maybe at the hunting fair, but my plan is not fixed to visit Salzburg.
However.
Welcome and best greetings from Munich.

Foxi
Thank you, Foxi!
It's great that there are very experienced hunters out there - like you - who share my passion for the old "golden days"...
I remember when the hunting fair was in Erding... I guess i'll be in Salzburg, hanging around at Rigby's and have a few beers... :)
Waidmannsheil, neighbour!

Hi @Kouprey,

You can check my thread on hunting in croatia, although not related to Tito, but to these islands that you mentioned.
Indeed, he had a residence on the islands of Brioni, of the coast of Istria.

Today it is a national park, and I mentioned it as one of national parks in Croatia.
It is still summer residence to our president, but most of islands are free for tooristic visits. There are hystoric sites, roman structures, summer theatre, etc...

Some animals on are stil there. Population of fallow is problematic. Too much.
However, to my knowledge, no hunting there, unless I am wrong.

To this residence, marshall Tito brought and introduced first breading heard of Mouflon.
As it turns out to be, mouflon hunting was one of Tito passions. From that initial herd, a program was developped for introduction of mouflon in mainland, and I beleive that all moufloun was reintroduced to hunting grounds in Croatia from that initial stock. A legacy. Moufloun now is wide spread around croatia

On hunting rifles:
In one of the threads I made some posts, (you will have to search), one of Titos hunting rifles is on sale in Croatia, mosin nagant given to him by central committee of USSR, with engraving, etc.. details of the seller I can find somwhere if you are intersted. Origin verified, papers certificates, etc

Fot other rifles of masrhall Tito, but not all, they are collected in museum in Belgrade, Serbia.
They have posted a brochure in pdf, on museum web site.
Language is bilingual, serbian (Cyrilic), and english.
You may like it. Here is the link to pdf brochure:
https://www.muzej-jugoslavije.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/2008-Lovačko-oružje-JBT.pdf

I have also attached this PDF here.

Titos trophies are also in museum in Belgrade.

There is also a book, about Tito hunting excursions and politicians who visited for hunt. The book:

Title: Tito - Lov - Poltika (engl Tito-Hunt-Politics)
Subtitle: Tito u lovu, lov u politici (engl. Tito in hunting, hunt in politics)
Author, Danilo Todorovic.
Link to amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Tito-lov-pol...odorovic&s=books&sr=1-2&text=Danilo+Todorovic

It can be ordered from several serbian book selling web sites, as well.
Unfortunately the book is in Serbian lanaguage, latin alphabet (not cyrilic)
I would love to find it in english translation, to have as present to several of my friends international hunters. But so far, to the best of my knowledge, the book is not yet trasnlated to english commercial version.

It was writen by a life long director of main Tito's hunting lodge mr Todorovic, where Tito brought many of domestic and foreign politicanas for exclusive hunts. And the book is full of details and anecdotes of those high level hunts. (Such as previous story). Dont mix this with islands, Brioni, previously mentioned
The hunting lodge was in area Belje, and hunting grounds were very large, partly in Croatia, partly in Serbia, and for it Tito himself said, it was a testing sample, for relations between two republics, when he brought croatian and serbian politicians for hunt, from informal socialising he could get a feeling of developing regional issues.
The area Belje was famous for best red stags. Even today, good hunting can be organised there.

Thanks a lot for this great informations - i will read the pdf-file! Tito surely was a very respected man. I see that Tito also had some Ferlach-Rifles... So do i. They are really masterpieces of guncraft, every rifle unique.
And i have heard about Belje and it's big stags, i think friends of mine have been there, will have to ask.
This summer i will be in Porec, maybe i can visit Brioni too...
Best regards: Kouprey

The fifth photo (buffalo) and next to last photo (rhino) are Marshall Tito with his wife. Pretty sure the trip was to northern Tanzania.

Pictures from the book With Flashlight and Rifle.

From this perspective the bulls are even better to see. It would not surprise me, if the one in the middle of the picture reaches 140 pounds.

Carl G. Schillings was 1895 the first time in East Africa, at that time there were still plenty of everything. Especially rhinoceroses caused his caravan a lot of trouble with their aggression, and the Massai tribes. Without his camp guards (Sudan Askaris) his expeditions would have come to a quick end.

It is not quite clear which weapons he had with him in the first visits (or I have to read it again more closely). The 9,3x62 were only available from 1907. But his double rifle for this bull was a .450.

Use enough gun and above all, plenty. Schillings was invited as an expert to the 1. International Wildlife Conservation Conference in London in 1899. The decisions of the colonial powers were groundbreaking. But, that is the fate of these conferences, and it remained without implementation. F.C. Selous was uninvited again, one did not want to have a commercial hunter at the table (which he used to be) and if the ideology is not right, one gladly renounces further expert advice. Does this sound familiar to you?
