Used Cars in America

Currently at around 240,000 miles on my Papa’s ‘94 Z71… It burns a little bit of oil, but doesn’t leak enough to put a stain on the driveway.

Stunning body! They aren’t making any more like that one. I hope you can diagnose and cure the burning oil. Take care of it like it’s a Ferrari. In 20 years, you’ll be able to trade it for two Ferraris.

That’s just what a small block Chevy does with 240,000 on it. :)

It doesn’t have seat heaters, or a Nav screen but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s been in our family since new. I can barely take it to Home Depot without someone asking, “hey, mister, you wanna sell that truck?”

Hunting season is upon us, it’ll be a muddy mess before too long. It’s well maintained and not abused; I hope it outlasts me.
 
I'll give Land Rover a couple of years to sort out the bugs on the new Defender. Until then, I'll make do with this old girl back when Toyota new how to copy everything good out of a Willis Jeep. This is my 1969 FJ40. Tuned her up this afternoon. Oil and filter, new plugs, cleaned the air filter, and adjusted the carburetor. Took maybe an hour and a half. Could not find a place to plug in a computer.

My 2016 F250 just went over 80K. As a diesel goes, it is just breaking in about now.

My wife gets a new car. After three Range Rovers, I became tired of the ridiculous maintenance costs. She is now in a new QX 80 V8 that we like just as much as the Range Rover. Cost of maintenance is not even comparable.

I love it @Red Leg . We looked into FJ40s but in our climate, a good one costs about half the price of a starter home. The Mrs. Picked a 2014 FJ with very low miles as her replica. While not exactly the same, it’s as close as we come in America to an African or Middle East landcruiser. It has minimum features, I was able to upgrade about everything on it with nothing more than a pocket knife.

The only thing yours might be missing is elephant leather interior. Go to Africa and get that and you’ve got the complete package. :)

I have to ask. Hypothetically speaking of course. Did you put your 2016 on an Adkins diet? You know, where about 1800lbs of equipment went missing and the longevity miraculous increased by about 300,000 miles?
 
We are going to Mahindra 4x4 double. . Comfortable ride 20k service 5 year service plan. 5 yr warranty. Turbo, 9 liters leather interior. Not even a loose screw

$36,000 1/3 price of landcruise dbl cab.

The Car Wizard has nothing nice to say about Fords over the past 30 years. 3-valve gas engines are his least favorite of all engines. In the diesel lineup, he only praises the 7.3l that existed 2007 or prior.

What none of the Internet channels will say (due to demonetization) is which vehicles are outstanding if you’re willing to become a felon with an EGR/DFP/DEF delete. That’s the third rail you shall not touch, but I know a lot of people rolling coal with great reliability in post 2006 diesel vehicles.

I bought my first Toyota not long ago. I had no ill-will towards them, but I didn’t appreciate their simplicity until I went to Africa and saw how their foreign market vehicles could be fixed in the bush with a factory tool kit containing a mere 7 wrenches. Obviously, a brand new USA Toyota requires $200,000 in tools to repair, but a ten year old USA Toyota can be fixed with merely the amount of tools a heterosexual US male over 40 already possesses. If it weren’t for emissions, Anti-lock brakes, and airbags, any millennial could fix them with $80 in chinese tools too.
The three valves are a pile. Dad still has a 3v V-10 in his F-550 service truck. I know overhead cams were all the rage, but they have several feet of timing chain. It’s just too hard to keep it tight.
There is a reason that GM used push rods in the similarly sized engines. The new ford 7.3 gas engine also has push rods with no overhead cam.
The 6.7 powerstroke is the only ford engine I will consider other than the 7.3, provided it has gone on the diet mentioned above. It’s a shame to because in my opinion ford had the best truck on the market, but a lousy engine.
I do really appreciate an older Toyota pickup, but have no use for one, we are 3/4 ton and up.

I’ve been in a few. I’m not sure I would call them low tech. But what they do have going for them is that they are the love project of a billionaire who is more interested in building the ultimate modern off-road vehicle and leaving behind a legacy, than trying to maximise profit margins by using the cheapest xxx .

I’m a big big fan. A working vehicle the way I would have designed it. Just look at the lack of touch screens and all those “flight switches” in the interior.

I'm not that familiar with them, but they have caught my eye. I saw one earlier this week as it passed me on the Sam Rayburn Tollway in the Dallas area. I don't know how he got it here, but it sure is a good looking vehicle.

Edit: looks like they are pretty readily available here in the US. Sewell in Dallas is currently showing 23 in inventory.

Some have been imported and sold here. There’s a guy that shoots at the same clays club that I do south of DFW that has one.. definitely a very nice looking vehicle (can’t speak to its performance)…

I saw two of these last year Lon and was impressed especially for the money. I live just 11 miles from one of their US corporate region offices. The problem is they do not make a street legal anything in the US

I bought a beautiful King Ranch F150 with the Eco Boost engine and hated the engine with a passion so much that I will never buy anything with that type of engine again given the trouble and money spent repairing it!!!!!

I think I own an ecoboost. A 2015 expedition EL with a 6 cylinder? All I can say is that its a total suck car. No balls. Even with the turbo, it struggles up hills. I believe it would have been even worse if it was a year earlier model in which case it would be a V8 Triton 3-valve, probably the worst engine of the 21st century.

My wife's 2015 Explorer Sport is equally anemic, and feels like an unstable soda can on and off the road. She likes it alot more than I do, and I will never buy another one of their pieces of garbage again. A terribly bland company with terribly bland products...

That explorer isn't designed for off road. I have a 2016 and it is a pretty good road vehicle but it is nto worthless once you hit the dirt other than improved dirt roads. Don't even think about their worthless 4x4 system
