I got to share my camp this year with dailordasailor, his wife and nephew, a great group of people and pretty good hunters as well. They arrived in camp mid-afternoon, so after letting them get all settled in, I suggested that we go out and see what we could find, since it was going to be a quick hunt with them only being able to spend a few days hunting. The nephew jumped in the side by side with me, and we were off for the other side off the ranch. Just as we got into the pasture that I wanted to hunt, we spotted a nice buck accompanied by 8 or 9 does. They were watching us very closely, so we drove on by them and kept an eye on them until they fed up and over the crest of the hill they were on. As soon as they did that, we got our stuff together and started a stalk. We got to the crest of the hill quickly to find the herd casually feeding and milling about in the valley below us perhaps 150 yards or so from us. M ( I'm going to call the nephew M from now on) got his sticks set up quickly and when the buck presented himself broadside, he took his shot. At first, I thought that he had shot over it's back, but soon blood could be seen running down from the animals back. He had hit him high in the middle of the back without connecting with the spine. The herd took off, but the buck couldn't keep pace and after a few seconds he stopped and presented M with another shot, this time he hit it right through all of the buck's important parts. He ran for a few more seconds and that was that. It was a fine buck for a fine young man and as soon as the photos were taken, and the field dressing started so did the rain, but we didn't care. The rain continued for the rest of the afternoon and kind of put a damper on our hunting for the rest of the day. We called it a day and headed back to camp with a nice Pronghorn buck and one very happy young hunter. To be continued.
