I headed to Hawaii for implementation of a new customer in October 2025. I took advantage of the situation and was able to work with Jeff and Keoni Grundhauser of Arrow One Ranch in Maui to get me in for a day hunt in Maui for Axis deer.
I booked my travel to arrive in Hawaii two days earlier than the work started, took a flight to Maui from Honolulu and was at the gate to the ranch before daylight on 10/14/2025. I just brought a few hunting clothing items with me and used the ranch rifle. I was tagged out on an axis buck by lunch, seeing over 100 animals in the morning alone. They are overpopulated in Maui and invasive. We were able to stalk into several groups, saw lots of axis females and males both in the early morning, we hunted our way across the side of the mountain and spotted a shooter buck coming across the canyon from right to left. I was on the sticks (same as used Africa) and ready when he came into the clearing. At approximately 150 yards I sent the shot when he stopped mostly broadside. The buck was hit hard and ran about 20 yards before piling up in sight!
The Arrow One Ranch team is great and if you get the chance while you’re on vacation I’d call them, they were more than accommodating to my last-minute request for a specific date. They caped the axis deer and called a local taxidermist to pick it up at the ranch for me. A grilled fresh Mahi Mahi lunch at the ranch before I flew back to Honolulu to start working. Great experience and great people!
