So at SCI i won a bid for a 2 person hunt with Rowdy McBride Hunting. I was going to take my youngest son Kelly, but the silly boy got a job. He had been unemployed for a few months so needs the job. So I asked my Friend Dorrin Diesel to come, here is our story
Hunters and guns
Peter Martin shooting a Cooper Model 52 in 280 Ackley Improved
Dorrin Diesel shooting a Weatherby Vanguard in 240 Weatherby
Day 1- get up around 2:00 AM with low blood sugars eat, get ready to go to the airport in Grande Prairie Alberta. Get there at 4:30 AM and its crowded. there are 3 flights leaving in a 45 minute time limit, and there is a problem with the flight before ours. 45 minutes in line finally check in. go through security and board plane we are off. flight is GP-Edmonton- Phoenix- ElPaso, with a little hiccup make it to El Paso where we rent a car and spend the night.
Day 2- Get up and head out I-10 to state 118 and 18 miles to Broken Tank Rode. We meet Rowdy at the gate, 15 miles to the cabin we are seeing Mule Deer, Antelope and sheep.
Have lunch get ready and head out, they use a Polaris Ranger side by side with a seat on the box. We drove around seeing lots of sheep, deer and antelope but no Javelina. Its a full moon and hot, Rowdy doesn't figure we will see any till after 6 PM. Around 7 Pm hadn't seen any but we come around a corner and there are about 10 on the top side of the rode, they take off. But there are some on the bottom side of the road
Rowdy says there are 2 good ones standing by each other rubbing, I get out of the buggy and take aim trying to get a shot, finally take a quartering shot and mine is down. So I get back in the buggy but leave my leg out. Rowdy takes off and my leg hits a Cholla cactus, { I wont repeat what I said but after pulling 20 plus barbs out I wont do it again. We stop at mine and while I'M pulling barbs out of my leg Dorrin spots one a 150 yard shot and we have 2. Rowdy says you both can shoot another from that bunch over there. I said we will pass we have all day tomorrow so are going to be picky.
We still have some light left so go and check a couple of spots for sheep. We stop at a gate I get out and open it they drive through and as I'm closing the gate Dorrin holler there are 2 big ones up there. I holler back shoot one, as I am 40 feet from my rifle. As i turn around I see one heading downhill, and Dorrin says there is one behind that bush. we wait 10 minutes he doesn't come out. Rowdy looks below the rod where there is a water hole there they are. Dorrin shoot and shoots over top they run 10 feet and stop. Bang and our third one is down.
Back to camp and have beer and supper
Day 2 Get up have breakfast and head out not out 10 minutes and bang we have a broken shock bolt. Jack up the buggy and fix it takes 10 minutes, head out.
Within 10 minutes we spot 2 nice Javelina 175 yards away. First shot over top second shot hit, I have my second one our hunt is over.
It's to early to go for lunch so we drive around look at sheep and take pictures. Most of Rowdy's hunting is for sheep so he is taking the time to do a count. Go back for lunch and then head out doing more looking around
This is Cholla cactus it is not fun
So the Ranch we where on is 150 square miles and we saw only a small part. This is in West Texas in the heart of the Davis Mountains and is part of the Sonoran Desert.Rowdy is book for Red Sheep 2 years in advance.
Overall a great hunt had some good laughs ate some good food, learned a lot, Rowdy is a Biologist and really knows his stuff and is willing to share that knowledge. I will be back down there for a Aoudad hunt hopefully in 2018.
