I’ve heard all the horror stories of hunter ruining their hunt because of chafing, or getting ticks and fever.

I have been given advice of using tight fitting cotton boxers, even tights.

However, hunting in the wetter New Zealand West-Coast I have had good experiences with thin merinowool boxers, as well as ordinary cotton briefs.

I believe the briefs would be heaps better with regards to chafing? Worse when it comes to ticks?

Spray my shorts in Phermetrin to keep the buggers away?

What does the gentlemen use, and what solution/brand would You reccomend?

Point is, white men not used to the tropics or desert, sweat a lot....... that gives us certain issues. I guess it has with body differences to do. I’m a regular guy, but I sweat, a lot. I want to take precautions, as I want my safari to be a smooth good experience, and not get stuck in camp for some issue I should’ve adressed..!

    My own policy:
    long pants
    long sleeves
    insect rep on the clothes
    insect rep on skin
    should suffice

Most guys tend to go for this look in varying shades of khaki.
If you can get brown tights it helps so your legs look like tree trunks.
Go for hot pants, the tighter the better, nothing will will crawl up the legs of those bad boys.
    It really does work.
And remember, what happens in Africa stays in Africa. No-one here will tell a soul and your PH will completely understand.

You may also get chafing under the arms and places such as your eye lids believe it or not.
I use bamboo socks for example which are extremely comfortable and soak up perspiration. These need to be very gently washed as in either a cloth bag or pantyhose if being washed in a washing machine. I hand wash bamboo socks as they will come apart very easily.

I'd use what your used to. I'be not had issues in my 4 safaris on the African continent. If your worried about extreme heat, get some performance/moisture wicking type boxers/briefs.

Yep just remember what the weather conditions should be in the area your hunting for that time of the year. Honestly I wear regular briefs when hunting there. A warm jacket is a must if your hunting the winter months for early mornings and late evenings. Lightweight gloves won’t be out of place either.

In Chewore, with all the tsé-tsé flies biting your body, you will never recall how is your underwear

I read an article in an outdoor magazine where they swore by panty hose for a horseback pack in hunt. In Africa it has always been cool mornings and warm afternoons when I hunted and have never given under ware a thought.

I can honestly say that I have never thought to think through the underwear issue. (n) I simply wear what I do at home and don't worry about it - never had an issue. Bug repellent doesn't phase a tsetse fly, but works very well against ticks (fortunately where I have hunted in Namibia and Mozambique one rarely ever sees them). In non tsetse areas, I hunt in shorts - where they are endemic, I hunt in long pants (they will murder you in the back of the cruiser in shorts.)

The worst area I have ever hunted with regard to ticks is North Carolina. Long pants bloused into a combat style boot, liberally sprayed at the waste and the top of the boot with repellent stopped most of them. Have not had to do that in Africa yet.
