My grandfather got to attend an honor flight. He was immigrant from Canada who was drafted into the army and naturalized at the end of his service.
Being discharged in 1963 he never deployed and felt he did not deserve to go, but everyone assured him it was ok. My uncle who retired from the USAF was his guardian. He really enjoyed his flight and seeing all the monuments and museums, several of his friends from town also attended and that made it extra special.
The honor flight is a great program and I’m grateful they gave my grandpa the chance to participate. He died a few years later on the Fourth of July, it seemed a fitting date.
