Is he buckling under the pressure of the ignorant elite media in America? Hopefully after he is briefed by Secretary Zinke and he fully comprehends the facts he will carry on with allowing the importation of sport hunted trophies. Positive economic value on game animals assures their future, everywhere on the globe.

For Now, Trump to Keep Ban on Importing Elephant Trophies

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Friday reversed
the government’s decision to start allowing hunters to import trophies of elephants that were killed in two African countries, pending a further review.

His evening Twitter message reversed a decision by his own administration over Zimbabwe that was announced this week and promoted as recently as Friday afternoon by the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!”

Ryan Zinke, the interior secretary, said in a statement later Friday night that the decision applied to two African countries, though it did not name them.

“President Trump and I have talked, and both believe that conservation and healthy herds are critical,” the statement said. “As a result, in a manner compliant with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, the issuing of permits is being put on hold as the decision is being removed.”

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service had signaled its intention to end the 2014 ban, citing Zimbabwe’s conservation efforts. On Thursday, the service announced on its website that it would begin issuing permits to allow the import of elephants hunted from 2016 to 2018, with two trophies allowed per import.

Nearly two weeks ago, the department also waived the ban in a similar manner for Zambia.

Zambia and Zimbabwe have had mixed success in recent years maintaining or increasing their elephant population, according to the Great Elephant Census, a project financed by Paul G. Allen, a founder of Microsoft. The project also found that the African elephant population shrunk nearly 30 percent from 2007 to 2014.

It is unclear why Mr. Trump reversed the decision, but the announcement faced backlash from both conservatives and liberals. Laura Ingraham, a Fox News host, said Thursday on Twitter that she did not understand how the decision would not “INCREASE the gruesome poaching of elephants,” while the comedian Ellen DeGeneres started an online campaign, using the hashtag #BeKindToElephants, to raise funds for elephant conservation efforts.

On social media, photos were being shared of Mr. Trump’s two elder sons hunting on safari in Zimbabwe, including one photo that showed Donald Trump Jr. with a severed elephant tail in one hand and a knife in the other.

The White House argued that the hunting would bring money to local communities and incentivize efforts to protect elephants. In defending the decision on Friday, Ms. Sanders cited a recently completed Park Service review that had begun during the Obama administration.

“This review established that both Zambia and Zimbabwe had met new standards, strict international conservation standards that allowed Americans to resume hunting in those countries,” she told reporters during a news briefing.

Under President Barack Obama, the practice had been banned because of a lack of data on conservation efforts in Zimbabwe.

Safari Club International, a trophy-hunting organization that sued the Obama administration in 2014 in an effort to challenge the ban and was the first to report the policy change on Tuesday, lashed out against the news media and “anti-hunters” for swaying the Trump administration to lift the trophy ban.

“The fight for the freedom to hunt is far from over,” Paul Babaz, the organization’s president, said in a statement. “We will be more proactive and not back down.”

But environmental groups applauded the reversal on Friday and called for more restrictions on trophy hunting, which has faced increased scrutiny, especially after an American dentist killed Cecil, a lion beloved in Zimbabwe, in 2015.

“It’s great that public outrage has forced Trump to reconsider this despicable decision,” said Tanya Sanerib, a senior lawyer with the Center for Biological Diversity, “but it takes more than a tweet to stop trophy hunters from slaughtering elephants and lions.”

Ms. Sanders also confirmed Friday that a near-total ban on the commercial trade of African elephant ivory enforced during the Obama administration would remain in place.

Easy come, easy go, it seems.

Trump hasn't exactly shown a penchant for buckling to the media. Additional pressure on Zimbabwe to get rid of Mugabe while they have the opportunity? Who knows ?

Time will tell. Either way, I still got my elephant.

Strange, they way he reacted though. I'm with you X3 but I want everyone else out there to have the same experiences I did and bring their trophy home.

Agree.

Time will tell. At least it didn't sound like a hard no.

A couple things to bear in mind. Trump is totally unfamiliar with the outdoors, doesn't hunt, camp, bird watch, water ski, nothing. Many Fox News celebs etc are equally naive about the conservation aspects of hunting. I saw a Laura Ingram tweet that was not much different than Chelsea Clinton.

Remember, this was a decision by Obama era appointees, it was based on science and facts. It did not come from on high. I've read all the Fish and Wildlife Service docs in regards to this decision, it's a solid decision. Elephant trophy hunting in Zimbabwe would have a demonstrably positive effect on elephant populations in the country.

I wonder if a lot of the deals or pricing for 2018 trophy bulls that have come out in the past two days will remain.

Only time will tell, no sense trying to figure it out till official word.

I wonder if anyone booked a hunt already based on the fact the ruling would be overturned.

I still think it should be resolved to the positive of hunters but in this policital climate they may have to let it blow over before proceeding

I just sent an email to the President, one of many I have sent, usually in support of his actions, not this one. I think upon review he will quietly reinstate his first order. I recommend everyone send a message to the President. Considering the number of replies I have gotten to my emails, I think someone there is listening.

I sent him a tweet :D

Another place to focus attention is with the media. I have yet to see a single news report that requested a statement from the government of any affected country. The media has to be challenged on why they perpetuate speaking about Africa as if it were a single country. It perpetuates a prejudice towards Africa as one backward, war torn place.

I wrote to one news outlet simply asking why no one from Zambia or Zimbabwe was contacted (harder with the latter just now) as they were the affected countries. Also, I asked why no other southern country was contacted?

Email from SCI. Another way to contact the President and let him know your opinion.

CALL TO ARMS! SUPPORT SECRETARY ZINKE & THE FWS DECISION TO IMPORT ELEPHANT TROPHIES FROM ZAMBIA & ZIMBABWE

Use SCI's Action Center to contact President Trump and Secretary of the Interior Zinke now and tell them how much you appreciate the efforts of the Fish & Wildlife Service to remove barriers to sustainable use conservation for African wildlife.

This week the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that elephants legally hunted in Zimbabwe and Zambia between 2016 and 2018 now can be imported into the United States. The Service made the announcement at the African Wildlife Consultative Forum, an event co-hosted by the Safari Club International Foundation and the host nation of Tanzania.

The news from Africa could not have been better for hunters or for anyone who loves or defends hunting culture. Hunters around the world play an integral role in wildlife conservation and when their rights are restricted, or import bans put in place, wildlife and local African communities all suffer.

This week's FWS announcement is consistent with what conservation scientists and wildlife experts have known for decades—that hunting is beneficial to wildlife and that African range countries know how to manage their elephant populations.

Within hours of the announcement, hysterical anti-hunters and news media outlets went into overdrive, attacking everyone in sight, including the Trump Administration, SCI and even the National Rifle Association of America. And their efforts seem to have paid off as their shrill, negative reactions has caused President Trump to delay the decision until meeting with Secretary Zinke.

Here's where you can help. Call or write now and tell President Trump and Secretary Zinke how much you appreciate the efforts of the Fish & Wildlife Service to remove barriers to sustainable use conservation for African wildlife. Be respectful and tell them you're a proud hunter, that you're not backing down, and that the facts of conservation science are on your side.

Tell them you strongly support the Fish & Wildlife Service's decision to allow the importation of elephant trophies from Zambia & Zimbabwe!

On the one hand, there is lots of political opposition to importing. Probably more opposition than support. So scientific backing is the best hope we have. This tweet kind of puts a damper on the current outcry and let's the antis feel heard. It gives the impression that his first impulse is against importation and if/when he decides to allow importation he can say he based it on undeniable science. The media loves to fact check this president so if it goes that way, it really could
Change the conversation when they find out elephant hunting is actually good for elephants

On the other hand the Paris accords were based on reasonable scientific consensus and we walked away from that, so my optimism is tempered

the anti-s and libs will never give up they have no life so infringe on ours- Trump very decision disappointing with this backtracking and nonsense - without trophy value they will not thrive as well period

what email address?

I'm sad to say but it seems he's not immune to being an absolute celebrity, something that we don't need in the White House

And who might have been less subject to this that you know of, or who was running, or had a chance to win? Yeah, didn't think so.. The guy is doing way better than I expected in almost every instance.
