Traditional Mauser Sporter Questions

I feel like the Remington 30 Express took a lot of its design cues from the sporter Mausers.

Yeah, BeeMaa it’s a steel buttplate. I bought the rifle from MNR customs

What make bases? S&S? I had to similarly carve out allowance for the hump underneath the first CCOP rail I used for my Czech 98 Mauser project. Donor action was already tapped for three hole one-piece bases. It took a while but eventually I got a tight fit. I think the rail was for commercial Mauser. I switched to 30mm tube scope and it mounted a little high so I found a lower discontinued Weaver base. It only has two slots for rings and a very short loading cutout. Works okay but I'd like to change ring location and widen the cutout. Moving the slots is easy enough but extending the cutout would cut into existing slots and weaken the rail. I have a local machinist who's skilled enough to make me another one using this one as a pattern. He can machine the rear base like CCOP's and I'll carve out what I need to fit around the hump rather than leave a gap like this one.

I used the Weaver top mount base #45 for the Mauser 98, along with the corresponding front base.

Thanks. Might be worth buying a pair and messing with them to see if I can make them work on my rifle. The custom fit on rear base would need to be very snug for only one screw. Maybe it might work ... but they are aluminum. Probably not. I used a CCOP rail for my plains game Springfield because the scope tube was short and no one makes quick detach extended rings. But the screw holes in the rail did not match up with holes my dad tapped in the receiver for two piece Weaver bases. So I drilled a new hole in the rail for one screw in forward end of rail (no room for second forward screw). Springfield receivers only have one screw for rear whether two piece bases or rail (rear base fits into dovetail for military rear sight). Consequently this scope base/rail is attached to the receiver with only two screws. But it is one-piece rigid steel and the rifle recoil is only 30-06. Two screws should be sufficient.

Your scope looks quite high. You might want to try low rings. Be advised "low" is not standard among ring manufacturers. Somewhere online I found a chart of height for each make of rings. A lot of variation!

I agree; the scope sits a bit high. But this is a knockaround gun that I picked up on the cheap, so I was just using what spare parts I had laying around. If I decide to keep it long term, I may decide to get some lower rings in the future.

PS - my apologies to the OP for straying a bit off topic, but hopefully some of this dialogue will help.

I have 2 Mauser sporters 3 if you count a Brno 22F, one was built pre WW1 on an Orberndorf action, it had claw mounts added, probably in the 20s, it came with an Ajack 4x with a European #1 reticle. It has a very light part octagon 20 inch barrel, some fool mounted a recoil pad. The other was built in 1933 never drilled for a scope, it also has a part octagon 24 inch barrel, it is my favorite hunting rifle. Both are 8x57i and DST.

I own a Husqvarna as well great rounded grip. They are based on an older Mauser, I think the 96 not the 98 and they are small ring so you don’t want to go crazy with a much bigger cartridge. But nice stalking rifle.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
