Interesting article and maps. Looks like the NE US is the problem area. I've spent a lot of time the last few months working on my hunting property in central Oklahoma and have been eaten up with ticks.

I live in western Pennsylvania. As a kid I don’t even remember ticks on our deer now I avoid walking through certain areas unless necessary. They are worst April/May and October/early November. I’m glad permethrin is so effective on clothes.

Well that is not surprising. Lyme disease started in Lyme CT in 1975 and has spread from there. And for those who like a good deeper story, Just off the coast from Lyme CT is Plum Island That has the animal Disease center and it is said there was animal disease testing back in the 50's and 60's which is where Lyme Disease came from. But no worries, Fauci and the like are good guys,,lol

After spending time in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my body started showing the symptoms of Lyme Disease. I went to the hospital and after tests, doctors ruled out the disease, but said it was the way my body reacted to a tick bite. The symptoms were terrible and the meds were even worse as they knocked me out (sleeping) for 48 continuous hours. I experienced the agony of the quintessential symptoms, but thankfully didn't have the disease. Be careful.

A number of years ago in the turkey woods I learned the effectiveness of Permithin. Something about sitting on the ground under trees and bushes that just attracts ticks to people and animals.

When I mentioned Permithin to a friend he just asked "what". I explained it to him and that afternoon we were at a Walmart picking up a couple of bottles for him.

Don't go out into the woods or grasses in the spring without it.

Well, look at the size of the OK tick! ;)

owning property in East Lyme and growing up in Connecticut I learned all about Lyme Disease as a little kid. Knew a lot of people who got it, some who didn’t know it for years and faced serious heath repercussions

Lymes is not the only risk either although some of the long term problems maybe unique.
Other areas have rocky mountain spotted fever, alpha-gal etc. My dad spent a week in the hospital near organ failure last year with an anaplasmosis infection from a tick bite.

Of course, who knows if there are long term risks to permethrin but in certain areas and certain times of year I absolutely use it, and it works.

Bit a week ago, now on doxy. Just have to watch sun exposure.
A buddy got this from a wood tick in PA. Wound up in the hospital for a few days.

    • Babesiosis: Caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. Many people have no symptoms, but it can cause flu-like symptoms and hemolytic anemia (the destruction of red blood cells).

FYI If you are in a part of the country that is infested with invasive cedar trees - Those cedar trees create a literal tick breeding ground; ticks need humidity to survive and those cedars being evergreens keep their branches nice and moist year round.

So if you are seeing massive amounts of ticks on your deer, consider doing a controlled burn and subsequent cedar removal options.

Borrelia (Lyme disease) is really common in Europe. Not sure about the UK or Scandinavia, but in Central Europe it is a plague.

I spray pants, shirt, ankles, waistline, cuffs and put bug juice on my face and neck anytime I go out to hunt.

On long walks, we avoid the forest.

Fields seem to be ok though.

An ounce of prevention…

I use permethrin 36.8% concentrate and dilute it down to 0.5%. I put it in a 1/2 gallon pump sprayer and go to town on our clothes and gear. We allow them to dry (and off gas) completely in the garage.

This is 1/2 gallon of diluted solution is typically enough for a weekend of turkey hunting clothing and gear. It’s also much less expensive than buying the Sawyer product.

Honestly, after treating my outdoor clothes with Sawyers pyrethrum tick issues have become a thing of the past for me.

Their still out there and a concern, but it’s nothing like I used to deal with before treating my clothes.
I make my own. The ag concentrate is way cheaper per bottle.
13.3% $24 for 32 oz bottle.

Sawyer is .5% for 24 oz bottle. And $18

Basically add about 1 oz to top off your sawyer spray bottle and fill with water
Just saved you $552 in sawyers permetherin.

I had the same experience with a tick bite, but in Deep South Texas , ( eastern Webb county specifically) . Came home had a tick around my belt line, turned into a large red ring and yellow center, couple days later wife was carting me to the ER , negative test for Lyme disease, the medicine had me bed ridden for a week. I am waiting for a rheumatologist appointment now because a recent blood test showed I have a autoimmune indicator, has me wondering if I was misdiagnosed because of my geographical location, but hell ticks carry so many diseases that I think the medical community has a problem actually getting a correct diagnosis?

The one that scares me is the alphagal allergy that makes you allergic to meats

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
