ZG 47 in 9,3 x 62 is my favorite rifle for big game hunting. I think that this rifle ZG 47 deserves reminder and recognition.
The ZG 47 unfortunately is relativery rare. It was shortly produced – there only 20,000rifles made. The rifle with serial number 00001 with date stamp 50 /1950/ was made in cal. 9,3 x 62 and belonged to the late Tony Harrison of Cape Town South Africa. The rifle is currently in possession of Mark Harison , son of the late Mr. Harrison Snr. The serial number of my rifle 03257.
The ZG 47 offered in the following standard caliber choices: 7 x 57 Mauser,
8 x 57, 8 x 60S, 8 x 64S, 30-06, 270WIN and 9,3 x62. Special order rifles could be had in 10,75 x 68 and 5,6 x 61 vom Hofe. ZG47 also offered as special order any Rimless cartridge no longer 3.33inches or 85mm thus rare rifles have known to exist in calibers such as the 9,3 x 64Brennecke and the 8 x 68S. The faktory poster for the ZG 47 rifle recommends the 8 x 64 caliber as the universal calibber for all hunting.
This rifle was equiped with Carl Zeiss Jena 4 x32 scope.
Scope mouting: the ZG47 like its predecessors sported the doubled square bridge action with integral dove tail grooves for scope mouting. I use Leupold scope 3-9 x 50.
This rifle is viewed by many as the pinnacle in Mauser action development and represents arguably of the finest factory production rifles ever made.

@Witold Krzyżanowski , ZG 47 is pretty common here in Sweden, have had the pleasure of handeling a few of them. Probably the best Mauser type action Brno ever made. Nice rifle!!

@Witold Krzyżanowski , you are welcome, if I did not have my Original Oberndorf Mauser in 9,3x62 project going I would love to have a ZG 47 in the same caliber(y)

We see these occasionally here in the states but not often and usually in 30-06. With the stock extender it must have a 15 inch length of pull! Neat rifle.

I like both the ZG47 rifle and the 9.3x62 caliber, very much.

Velo Dog, this is a real bush rifle and bush caliber. I prefer 9,3x62 for big game hunting.
I think it is better than 375 H&H Mag.

If 9.3x62 was legal for dangerous game in all African countries and if ammunition was as widely available, I might agree with you because, it definitely is effective (especially with today's very tough bullets) and yet has very tolerable recoil.
I have only taken one buffalo and I shot it with a .45 caliber, 480 grain bullet but, no doubt he would have been bagged if I had shot him with my 9.3 instead.
Mine is an FN Mauser from the 1950's and I have a Khales 4x scope on it in low rings/Talley bases (the older style Talley bases and rings), plus "express" sights, to look and function like a Pre-War sporting Mauser.
Doctari505 has one very similar to yours and it has taken many buffaloe.
He wrote about that rifle and caliber in his fantastic book; "Africa's Most Dangerous".

The veb is very good article by 9,3 x 62 - " Otto Bocks Cartridge - African Expedition Magazine".
I like to hunt with .275Rigby and .404Jeffery but 9,3 x 62 is may favoeite caliber for big game hunting.
I like books about rifles. Very good is " Dangerus Game Rifles" - Terry Wiland. I have second edition.

    Hi again Witold,

Yes, I also like rifle books and I also have that same book.

Also, I met Terry Wieland (Weiland?) in Tambo Int. Airport once.

We were both walking into the SAPS Office at the same time.

He was planning to hunt plains game with his Schultz & Larsen rifle in 7x61 caliber.

We had a nice talk, he is a friendly person.

Another book that I enjoy is: Safari Rifles by Craig Boddington.

There is a Safari Rifles II that Boddington has also written.

I have many books about hunting but, most are regarding Africa hunting.

Some of the best ones describe in detail rifles, bullets and sights/scopes and how they all work on various animals or hunting conditions.

    Kind regards,
    Velo Dog.

Great photos Witold, pure gun porn. My rifle is a .30-06, imported secondhand from Sweden by Graeme Champion. I had hoped to get an 8mm off him but he was cleaned out of 8x64 and 8x57 so I grabbed the best 30-06 that he had left. It is a great rifle, hardly used by the previous owner, I reckon. I have put a small scar on the stock since acquiring it but if you don't take a hunting rifle into the hills, why have it?

I have fitted it with a beautiful mid-90s Burris 4x scope in Warne medium QD mounts which give perfect repeatability at 100m when removed and replaced. Hard to imagine a better combination for me.

P.S. I got a gunsmith to replace that ridiculous factory butt-plate, one of the worst designs ever made in my estimation, with a Pachmayr decelerator.
