The .375H&H a very versatile rifle

The 375 H&H magnum is a wonderful cartridge. I have it in belted rimless form in a CZ 550 Safari Magnum and in the flanged case for a H&H Royal double . Have taken loads of water buff and pigs with them . I only use the 300grain bullet because the double is regulated for it and it is easy to find 300grain rimless ammo .
I have never had a 375 and doubt I ever will. I am however, intrigued by the 375 Flanged. How does it compare your mind to the 375 Magnum or 9.3x74R?

.375 H&H is my favorite cartridge. Used it almost my entire adult life after graduating from the .303 I grew up with.

For a while in my early 20’s I worked on a farm in Botswana for my uncle, and a lot of my job was shooting impala to sell to the local butchery. My working gun was a really nice Howa .223, and for head shots on impala, great gun.

But when we went hunting proper, shooting meat for the pot in camp, and used a .223 for boiler room shots on impala, we found the bruising to be horrific. So much meat wasted. Mind you, 90% of our shooting is within 75m, walking and stalking, so that high FPS flat shot from the .223 is not put to best use.

So started using the .375 for impala. Much less bruising and the impala drops on the spot every time. And of course, used it for eland, kudu and other bigger stuff too.

So yes, .375 is my do everything gun.
Is the bruising caused by the high velocity of the .223?

That’s my understanding. I’m sure there are guys more knowledgeable on ballistics who can chime in, but on the last hunt I was on with my cousins, we took a number of impala and warthog, about half with .223 and half with .375, and in the cold room you could clearly see the .223 animals were all much heavier bruised, with a lot more wasted meat

Probably a bit more powerful but not much of a difference .

When I started bear hunting in Canada and Minnesota I was using a 375hh with amazing penetration I started calling it my any angle caliber you could shoot any animal in North America from any angle and get to or through the goods on one hunt I shot a 400 lbs black in the chest at 25 yds it was walking fast when I pulled the trigger it blew it back 5 ft into a tree plus I had a whiteness. I have a CZ 550 with a fiberglass stock any angle any weather.

I have its close cousin, the 9.3x62, and use 250, 285, and 286 grain bullets. Recoil is very manageable with proper posture. For range sessions over about 10 rounds, I use a shoulder pad, which helps quite a bit. I have not tried reduced loads.

One load for my .375 H&H. 300 grain bullet, 70.0 grains of RL15, Federal 215 primer and 2,550 fps. That’s the only load I shoot in my .375 H&H. The only variable is which bullet, among Bear Claw, TSX, A-Frame, Nosler Partition and Cutting Edge Safari Solid. They all group together so no reason to screw around with other loads.

I’ve got the…..

270gr SP going 2,650fps - practice and pig hunting

Buffalo & Tuskless ammo is…
350gr Woodleigh RNSP @ 2,275
350gr Woodleigh FMJ @ 2,275
350gr North Fork FN solid @ 2,275

My buddy and his son have New Haven M70 stainless.375s and mine is a BRNO, now that accuracy and velocity testing is done we are scheduling a range day to confirm trajectory at extended ranges and burn through a bunch of those 270gr soft points for practice.

Who has a .375 that loads it down for pleasure/practice, & loads it back up for hunting? Maybe loading a mid load for deer etc. It is a very fun cartridge.
Hello,
Yes, I'm downloading the .375 H&H Magnum cartridge to the level of a 9.3x62 Mauser. I bought my rifle in .375 H&H Magnum over 20 years ago for hunting in Africa. After that, it accompanied me to Canada. Now I also use it for driven hunts in Germany. I love the rifle and don't want to sell it. The downloaded .375 H&H Magnum is very effective on wild boar and both small and large red deer.

I'm using a 270 grain Nosler AccuBond bullet with 62 grains of Norma N202 powder. The muzzle velocity is 2572 fps. The picture shows my rifle. It's a Mauser Oberndorf with magnum system and double square bridge.

The 235 grain Speer makes a great practice round that would most certainly work on quite a few game animals as well. I've been shooting the .375 H&H for about 35 years and can't imagine life without one.

Yours is a magnificent rifle .

There are only three chamberings that I have multiple rifles of: the 303 British, the 30-06 & the 375 H&H. I'm a big fan of all three. I've haven't loaded either of my 375 H&H rifles down yet. I enjoy shooting them with regular loads. I have a left-handed Winchester 70 Safari that is one of my favorites. I usually either put a Swarovski 1.7-10x42 or a Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4x24 Zenith on it. My other 375 H&H is a Winchester 1885 Safari Octagon with a Zeiss Diatal Z 6x42 MC. It's an uncomplicated single-shot & fixed-scope setup that's equally enjoyable to shoot.

As a big fan of the 375 H&H, I would never say a bad word about the Flanged version either. But I really like my Ruger No. 1S in 9.3x74r. It may be .009 smaller in diameter but it's still close enough to be just as much fun! Having it with a variety of ammunition to plink with is probably why I never bothered to download any 375 H&H rounds. I just shoot my slightly milder but almost equally large 9.3 instead. :D

I got into a 9.3x74R early in my big bore quest. I ended with a 450/400 in Africa, but I still have and love the 9.3.

My 375HH is set up for plains game and I use it as a back up to my heavy rifles. NF 5.5X22X50 scope. Best killing machine made by man.

Hopefully this is the correct thread to ask a couple of questions about hunting with a .375, moving forward. First off though is that I hope to get to Africa in a few more years when I retire. I have a LH SAKO AV in .375 H&H that I purchased specifically in anticipation of going to Africa. And, I do hand-load. Finally when I go, a cull buffalo cow is something I would like to take. The question I want to ask today is about bullets.

I’ve been intrigued by the Hornady DG line and want to see how they shoot in my rifle. However, I just came across a thread that indicated that they may not be a good choice. So now I’m wondering if I should just default to 300 grain Barnes solids and Xs for load development and call it a day. What are others’ experiences in this regard with game ranging from impala to a buffalo cow and perhaps an eland?

Oh boy, the world is your onion. Barnes is always on the list. Also look at Northfork Bullets. They make excellent expanding and solids. Also Swift, CEB-Cutting Edge Bullets and likely a few I am missing. I am currently loading CEB SAFARI RAPTORS and solids for an upcoming safari. Accuracy is excellent. I am sure you will get more opinions. Most of all enjoy experimenting and good luck with your safari.

The seven pages of this 375 / Buffalo thread might be a useful read:

I used a .375 H&H for a klipspringer at a bit over 200 yards. The solid did its job perfectly with minimal damage to the cape. A solid .375 makes about the same size hole as an expanded 6 or 6.5 mm bullet. Lower velocity = less damage to the trophy. Could use the same bullet for hippo or elephant. Versatile indeed!

I’ve been perusing that thread this evening. Very informative. Thank you

Still possible to order one of these?

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.
