Hi All,

Long time lurker and have only responded to threads in the past. However, my adult son and hunting partner, has just taken a job at a start up in Austin, Texas and is relocating from CA where we reside. I have never researched Texas whitetail hunts, but now that he is there, I figured I would give it a shot. I know (well I think) most of the Texas whitetail hunting is out of blinds over feeders, etc and Im ok with that. However, I am looking for low fence operations. Not interested in High Fence hunting or exotics. I attend DSC, Texas Trophy Hunters convention in January and occasionally SCI so if there is someone who exhibits there that I should speak to, please advise.

Who should I look to for a whitetail hunt with low fences? Thanks. Doesn't have to be Trophy bucks as my son subsists on venison, moose, elk and whatever else we are able to put in the freezer.

Big thanks for any leads.

I think @gizmo has both low fence and high fence opportunities at the Rockin G?

Might want to reach out to him and see what he has to offer… several AH members have hunted with him, and I’ve only ever seen great hunt reports…

I think for low fence, you should really be looking for a “lease.” They are usually per gun pricing. IMO that would be the most economical for meat type hunts. The high fence places are selling horn by the inch. You have to ask around to find a good lease. Feed stores would be a good starting point.

@MCB

We offer low fence hunts for Whitetail and Axis Deer in the Golden Triangle of South Texas. The ranch is about 3.5 hours drive Southwest of Austin.

The ranch borders 2.5 miles of the Nueces River providing excellent wildlife habitat.

Our hunts are three days, fully guided, with open bar, meals and lodging provided in our Hacienda.

Here are a few bucks taken on the free range hunt. Please see our website www.reserveranch.com on DM for details.

Check out Wildlife Systems, Inc. They offer both high fence and low fence options on several different ranches.

Texas is a big state and you can certainly find what you’re looking for but knowing what that is and price range might dictate best options. Also how far you want to travel for the hunt. From Austin you can drive 7 hours in a couple of directions and not even get out of the state.

Also as mentioned a lease might be a better option and provide more time in the woods then a quick 3 day deer hunt

Many options here. I'd recommend going to TTHA OX in Dallas in January or their summer shows. For comparison Wildlife Systems here in San Angelo is one of the best outfitters for deer in my area. For nontrophy the Sky is the limit as there are far too many deer here.

My father and his friend went on a free-range Axis hunt with "Muley Mike" this spring at West Texas Hunt Organization:

It rained the majority of the hunt but they got into some Axis and said the guides were good. You are really limiting yourself for writing-off exotics versus low-fence whitetails in TX. The Axis meat is superb to anything you'll hunt in North America. And I'm saying this with half a moose still in the freezer.

There are a lot of other places in the US that I would go hunt whitetails for the kind of money you'll spend in TX. I know Mike has some whitetail opportunities, so feel free to contact him.
