Ok I have the hots for another obsolete caliber, the idea of having a rifle capable of 4000fps is giving me a warm fuzzy

I built one on a M98 action 2 years ago. XX #7 contour Douglas barrel, blueprinted, Timney trigger, Speedlock firing pin & Medalist stock. It shoots 3900 FPS and groups 1/2" with 65gn bullets. Burris black diamond 8-32 scope. Prairie dogs explode when hit. I won't try to talk you out of the idea...

Go for it! I'm not a fan of the 6mm Remington but hey if you like it and you want one go for it. Kinda like me with a 505 Gibbs I don't need one but I sure do want one. After shooting Action Bob's I decided that I should get one just for good measure.

It's not stupid. Actually like it better than the .243, easier to load for. For me anyway & with nearly any 100 gr bullets is an excellent Whitetail round.

Wrong place to be called stupid for buying a rifle. Check with your wife or girlfriend if that's really the answer you want. :A Phone: :V Make My Day:

I used my .243 Win for almost a decade to deer hunt. I never felt under gunned.

Shot one for years my father built killed lots of whitetail and hogs with it. Only had an issue once where a bullet did not penetrate the grissel shield on a boar though I suspect that this hand loaded round was a squib. Second shot to the neck killed him dead. That gun is incredibly accurate unfortunately it weights 11 1/2 pounds which is a bit much for what it is and what I was using it for. Can't say anything bad about the round though

My father has shot a lot of pronghorn and whitetail with a 243. Not so great for larger whitetail in south Texas, he moved up to a 270 for a whitetail gun. I've used a 243 to shoot a lot of deer too, but I've moved up to a 308 as my go to deer gun. I do like the no recoil, fast speed and very flat shooting of the 243. My only concerned with the 6 rem v the 243 win would be buying ammo off the shelf. Not sure if I can walk into the Walmart and get the 6, but I know with the 243 I can walk into just about any store selling ammo and get some. Of course, if you are loading your own and take plenty with you it's not a problem. As others have said the biggest problem, is how to convince mama, that you need another gun.

The only stupid part of it would be if you got one of those "light bullet only" rifling twists, as initially presented in the .244 Rem. Otherwise, it beats the 243 Win as if it was a drum.

What Ray B said. If not for that mistake by Remington, the 6mm Remington would probably be in the place the .243 is today.

Ive never owned a 6mm Rem specifically.. but as a general rule I love 6mm's..

I just started reloading for .243 recently.. always loved the .243 but never really appreciated what it can really do until I went into mad scientist mode with it and started playing with different powders, projectiles, etc.. Im amazed at how flat and accurate its become (its always been both flat and accurate.. but now its uncanny how well my rifle shoots)...

Never owned a 6mm, however my Win Mod 70 in 243 will drive tacks. Using 70 Gr SMKs I won several State Championships with it.

Yeah, I don't think anyone on here is gonna tell you not to get a gun you don't need if you want it. We are all likely just like you.

I have zero experience with the 6mm and until recently none with the .243 either. My father and I are die-hard .308 lovers and would never get rid of ours (his a Savage 99 and mine a Browning BLR), but a few years ago we each bought a .243 just because we got the urge (his a NEF Handi-Rifle, mine a Thompson/Center Venture) even though either of us had ever used one. I always assumed that they were too light for our Saskatchewan game, even though they are very popular up here. Needless to say, we both have a new-found love for the .243 and regret not trying them out sooner. We've shot 4 whitetails with them now and the results were impressive. It will be in my hands while hunting a lot more in the future. The 6mm should do as good a job for you!
