I am tempted…I have two Rigby HS in 275 and 9.3x62. I also have a Rigby DR in 450 NE. I think I have all that I need…however I have found a really good deal on a Rigby Big Game in 404J

Please talk me out of this!!!

Yes don’t get the .404. You obviously need a .416 since you have the .275 and it’s the namesake.

I love the .404 but when I get a Rigby it’ll have to be a .275/416 combo with a 9.3x62 mid ground if I need a third

We all know why you actually posted. You did not come on AH to get talked out of it, that is for sure. lol. You have our collective enthusiastic blessing! Go for it!

That Rigby BG in .404 is on my short list. I have researched it enough to know that is must have for the serious connoisseur. You will not regret it.

Please post pics when it is in hand brother!

On moral grounds and in good conscience. I cannot bring myself to give a friend such bad advice.
Get it and enjoy.

Weeeelll, since you're *actually* asking for reasons against buying it... the 9.3 and the 404 pretty much solve the same problem - in the same way - although the latter is universally rated as "allowed for any game". The 404 is pretty much the "super-size me" option of the 9.3, especially when the 9.3 is loaded with the heavier bullets - 300+ gn.

I have both, but alas, not in the Rigby flavour of rifle, and I feel that they overlap quite considerably in terms practical hunting. So there is a risk that your 9.3 won't be seeing much sunlight, if you get the 404.

On the other hand, the 9.3 can be loaded light and fast, with 230-250gn projectiles, and then it has a bit more reach, but .... ah, what the hell .. you don't really want to hear any negative or questioning opinions. Get the rifle and tell us about it! :)

You want it then I say get it, you only live once!

NO! I will not.

I always think it’s hard to be a Rigby fan and not own a 416 Rigby and 450NE. But there’s a lot of nostalgia with the 404J, so whatever flavor you favor.

If thinking of one because the PH models presently listed, hard to scoff at the discounted price especially with chances of knocking another 10% off…so with the ability to pick one up a few thousand less than a 416, if someone was even slightly intrigued by the cartridge, seems smart choice.

@Rare Breed I thought you already had a .404J or did you get rid of it?

Either way I think you should buy the .404 Rigby, how many things can you buy and enjoy then later possibly make money from?

If you buy it right, you will at least break even.

The 404 J is an excellent first shot on Buffalo rifle. The 450 will be great if there is a follow up. So enjoy the new 404 and I hope you get a good selling price on the 9.3

You could retire from handloading, then your ammo choices would be so limited the purchase wouldn't make logical or practical sense. Even so, there aren't as many bullet choices in 423 as there are for 416 (were you to go with the Rigby), but it's close enough; you pick the one you want and stick with it in the big calibers.

OTOH, I would go for it. Unique caliber. Long, sexy neck (for a big girl). Skirt fits snug without a belt. Plus, it's a model you don't have. Do it!

Let me give it a try…buy the 404 Jeff and 458 Lott in matching blanks. Should look awesome!

I heard 404 Jeffery is a good DGR cartridge. Can't recall exactly who told me but I do remember he was a renowned hunter and a really nice fella who has excellent manners. And very good looking too. A regular Prince Charming. Damned if I can remember his name though. Someone help me out here.
