The Vredefort Dome (Crater) (see also www.vredefortdome.co.za) is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact sites in the world. It is South Africa's seventh World Heritage Site and this is largely due to the research scientist from Wits University, including Dr. Rodger Hart.

Despite the importance of impact sites to the planet’s history, geological activity on the Earth’s surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most of them, and Vredefort is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor.

Vredefort is a small farming town in the Free State province It is home to 3,000 residents. The area displays exceptional scenic beauty and is rich in biodiversity with remarkable animal and plant populations. Various cultural features also add to the value of the area. The Vredefort Dome has an exceptional tourism potential, the Vredefort Dome is situated approximately 100 km from Johannesburg.

Not many impact craters are found on the surface of the earth (approximately 160), because much of the surface of our planet is covered by water and therefore exposed to the effects of erosion. The earth’s impact record therefore consists mostly of recent craters, and a few old, but very large ones.

**Zimbabwe**

Our concession in Zimbabwe lies just east of Nuanetzi in Mateke Hills and covers almost 80 000 acres of unfenced wildlife. In this area we offer elephant, leopard and buffalo hunting in true fair-chase African style. Other species roaming freely include nyala, kudu, eland, klipspringer and more.

Wingshooting with Safari Co. Africa

Pigeon Shooting

Pigeon shooting is suitable for novice, intermediate, or advanced shot-gunners. It is a day filled with unlimited shooting and no bag limits. More laid-back than terrestrial game bird shooting, we start leisurely in the mornings at about 08:00, with the tempo tending to speed up towards midday. Brunch is served in the veld and we finish the day at about 17:00.

Please note that pigeon shooting is dependent on the sunflower crops and the rate at which these crops mature. The crops (and venues) vary in size: the smallest being about 40 hectares (80 acres) and the biggest being about 600 hectares (1200 acres). We offer pigeon shooting from mid March (depending on crops and their maturity – sunflower especially) to mid June.

When shooting pigeons you can expect to bag three different types:
  • Rock Pigeons
  • Laughing Doves
  • Ringneck Pigeons
There are no bag limits for pigeons.

Mixed Bag Safaris

A mixed bag safari includes some pigeon shooting if they are still flying, and is offered from mid May to end of September at season’s end. We focus on terrestrial game birds like Swainson’s Francolin and Guinea-Fowl, as well as waterfowl like Spurwing Geese, Egyptian Geese, and ducks (like Yellowbill, Teal, Whistling Ducks, etc).

The single- and mixed- bag hunts are for the intermediate to advanced shot-gunner, and the terrain determines the skills and fitness levels required. The hunt will be on foot, in the company of a Professional Hunter with a GSP.

The days start very early in the mornings with traditional South Africa coffee and rusks, followed by hunting from 06:30 to 10:30. Venues are never more than 20-30 minutes from camp, and after the early session, brunch and a siesta are enjoyed. Thereafter, the afternoon shoot starts at 15:30 and ends with the lasts light at about 18:00.

Add-on hunting that may include plains-game species like bles-buck, zebra, black wildebeest, springbuck, or more, can be arranged, at an additional cost.
